DAF DISCUSSIONS - YOMA 4

Binyomin Cohen asked:

"It must be that Rebbi Yochanan sided with Rebbi Akiva only because he had a Kabalah that the Milu'im is the source for Perishah," What context and what meaning is it to say only because "he had a Kabala" is why Rebbi Yochana sided with Rebbi Akiva.

Binyomin Cohen, Brooklyn, New York, USA

The Kollel replies:

I could not find exactly the source you cited that R. Yochanan only sided with R. Akiva because he had a Kabalah. It is true that TOSFOS 4a DH TANYA writes that R. Yochanan sides with R. Akiva who maintains that there was no Perishah before Sinai and therefore Perishah must be derived from Miluim. However Tosfos does not write that R. Yochanan received this Din as a Kabala from R. Akiva and in fact Tosfos proceeds to ask why one cannot say that R. Yochanan could also agree with R. Yosi ha'Gelili. Tosfos also writes that R. Elazar, who was R. Yochanan's student, learnt the verses like R. Akiva and presumably R. Yochanan had received this from his teacher. Nevertheless, Tosfos does not write explicitly that R. Yochanan had a Kabala from R. Akiva, who was a few generations before him, and one could still argue that R. Yochanan decided to accept R. Akiva's opinion because it seemed more logical to him but not because of the Kabalah.
