DAF DISCUSSIONS - KIDUSHIN 4

Avrahom Kevelson asks:

Normally that which is out of the ordinary is open to derasha...

However; יצא חינם...she leaves for free. The entire phrase כסף אין כסף... the phrase is open for derush because by definition if leaving "Free" we know there's no money...so why limit it to a "yud"

2. Anyone who knows lashon Kodesh knows that the correct every day spelling אין has a yud.

The two pesukim brought down מאן יבמי that's the question for derush why is there no yud?

This goes into a bas kohen divorced from a Yisrael. There are different levels of pasul but once one knows she can't eat Terumah, any non kohen descendent or challal descendent, upon the death of her husband she can't eat terumah. So when they investigate it would cover everything, grandchildren, pesulim etc....so the question how can the "yud" be utilized for both...it's not.... It's being used to investigate her if she has no descendants return to being a bas kohen and eats if not and a pasul, or Non kohen descendants exist she has to eat chulin.

Only a BAs Yisrael once married to a kohen would legitimate male descendants allow her to eat terumah.

The Kollel replies:

Hi again Avrahom,

1. The Gemara specifically says what the words ״ויצאה חינם אין כסף״ teach us. ״ויצאה חינם״ we learn that if she is a Bogeres even without Simanim, she is released, and from ״ואין כסף״ we learn that Simanim release her at an earlier age of Na'ara. The Drasha of the Yud comes in the next stage.

2. It is tricky to try to understand Drash of Torah she'Bechtav using the knowledge of 'anyone who knows Hebrew'. In practical Hebrew, usually in Torah she'be'Al Peh, but in any text that is generated without vowels (Nekudos). We are used to writing Hebrew using Ksiv Maleh, to make it easier for the reader. The Torah isn't written in a 'user friendly' manner. Every letter has a meaning. If we find that the Torah in one place can do without the Yud as a vowel, this should raise a flag. The vowels aren't essential, especially if we find other cases that the Torah can do without them. The Drash is, that there are several levels of 'Ein'. There is an obvious 'Ein', where we do not see a born child who is a Kosher Cohen, but there is another level which is still a Chidush, that even a Zera Posul, is considered a descendent enough to out need Yibum, or enough to consider her a mother of a Cohen and keep on eating Teruma? Or maybe in other words, the clear-cut cases are included, but what about the grey zone? This is what "Ein La - Ayen Alav" can onclude.

I hope this helps,
