Why did Avimelech go to kill Ba'alei Migdal Shechem only after they went to the Tzari'ach?

Malbim: The tower was of stone. Avimelech could not overcome it. It was Hashgachah that they left to take refuge under wood, to fulfill "Tetzei Esh me'Avimelech v'Sochal..." (verse 20).
