What do we learn from "va'Yasger la'Barad Be'iram"?
Rashi: When the hail began to fall, the Egyptian made his flock flee to the house. The hail became like a wall in front of him. The Egyptian slaughtered his animal and put it on his shoulder, to take it to his house and eat it. A bird came and took it from him - "u'Mikneihem la'Rshafim."
Malbim: Hail killed their animals. This was not needed, for later, "He will send His anger" (verse 49), i.e. Dever 1 , to kill all their animals!
Surely there is is a printing mistake. Dever was before hail! I also question his Perush that hail was not needed for the animals. Dever killed only animals left in the field. Hail killed the animals that survived Dever in the house, of Egyptians who did not fear Hashem's word, and now left them out in the field! And in any case, hail was needed to kill slave left in the field, and break the trees...! (PF)
What are "la'Rshafim"?
Rashi citing a Midrash: They are birds - "u'Vnei Reshef Yagbihu Ohf" (Iyov 5:7).
Rashi: They are like "Rishpei Esh" (Shir ha'Shirim 8:6, i.e. coals) - "v'Esh Mislakachas b'Soch ha'Barad" (Shemos 9:24).
