What is the meaning of "la'Ba'al"?

1.

Rashi: It is on behalf of Ba'al.

2)

What is the meaning of "Toshi'un Oso"?

1.

Rashi: It is to take vengeance for it, like "v'Hoshe'a Yadi Li" (Shmuel 1 25:33).

3)

What is the meaning of "Asher Yariv Lo"?

1.

Rashi: [Who] will quarrel on behalf of it?

4)

What is the meaning of "Yumas Ad Boker"?

1.

Rashi: Wait until morning [Radak - to see if Ba'al itself will kill Gid'on to avenge his act].

5)

What is the meaning of "Elokim"?

1.

Targum Yonasan: Im Tzarich Eis Bei. Radak - this refers to strength [to avenge what was done to it], like d'Leis Behon Tzeroch 1 , which is Targum Onkelos of (Devarim 32:17) "Elohim Lo Yeda'um 2 ."

1

Lev Yitzchak: Based on the Sifri on that verse, the Targum means that they are not needed; there is no benefit from them.

2

Really, it is the Targum of the words just before this, "Lo Eloha"! Perhaps Radak cited what is more known, or cannot be confused with "ha'Lo Eloka" (Iyov 22:12). This requires investigation. (PF)

QUESTIONS ON RASHI

6)

Rashi writes that "Toshi'un Oso" is to take vengeance for it. This is just like "Terivun la'Ba'al" earlier in this verse!

1.

Malbim: He said, no matter what you will say, you should not take vengeance for it. If it has ability but does not want to avenge its honor, why should you do so for it? If you think that it wants to take vengeance, but it cannot 1 , why was it silent the entire night? Gid'on is still alive! Rather, surely it has no ability. Do not say that it does not want to quarrel. [Gid'on] destroyed its Mizbe'ach - it would not be silent! 2 Rather, it is not Elokim; it has no power, and it is folly.

1

From the continuation, it seems that he means 'it did not have opportunity yet.' (PF)

2

Above, he said that if it does not want to avenge its honor, also you should not. He now refutes this possibility. (PF)

7)

Rashi writes that Ad Boker means 'wait until morning.' Why did he say so?

1.

Rashi: He wanted to stall them, to give Gid'on time to flee.
