Why does it say "Hashmen Lev ha'Am ha'Zeh"?

1.

Rashi: This is like "Hachbed Es Libo" (Shemos 8:11). It is like Pa'ul conjugation; their heart gets increasingly fat, and their ears get more heavy, from being able to hear.

2.

Radak: Refer to 6:9:2:2-3.

3.

Malbim: Because their heart had fattened from any Chachmah and intellect, their ears were heavy and their eyes were plastered. If they will find Chachmah in your words, they will make their ears heavy and close their eyes.

2)

What is the meaning of "Hasha"?

1.

Rashi: They are plastered over [Radak - so they will not see], like "Ki Tach me'Re'os Eineihem" (44:18). The Targum of Hito'ach (Vayikra 14:43) is d'Iytsha 1 .

Our text of Onkelos is d'Yitsha. (PF)

3)

Why does it say "Pen Yir'eh b'Einav"?

1.

Rashi: They put their heart not to hear the Nevi'im's words, amidst fear lest their words be good in their eyes, and they will understand in their hearts and return to Me.

4)

Verse 9 put hearing before seeing. Why does it say here "Pen Yir'eh

1.

Malbim: First we recognize the Creator through sensory sight of His many acts and creations, and afterwards from tradition from generation to generation, and afterwards via demonstrations of intellect and knowledge - "ha'Lo Sed'u ha'Lo Sishma'u ha'Lo Hugad me'Rosh Lachem" (40:21). Verse 9 said 'hear, or in any case see'; seeing is the beginning of understanding.]

5)

What is the cure?

1.

Rashi: To return to Me (repent).

2.

Radak: It is cure of the Nefesh - pardon. "Refa'ah Nafshi Ki Chatasi Lach" (Tehilim 41:5).
