What do we learn from "Im Tashiv mi'Shabas Raglecha"?

1.

Eruvin 52b #1: If someone has one foot in the Techum and one foot outside, he may not re-enter. Raglecha is written without a Yud, i.e. one Regel.

2.

Eruvin 52b #2: If one foot is in the Techum and one is outside, he may re-enter - we pronounce it "Raglecha" (both feet are outside).

3.

Radak: You will not go outside the Techum on Shabbos. It says Tashiv, for if you go on the way and remember that it is Shabbos, you will turn your feet back from going further, due to the honor of Shabbos.

4.

Malbim: There are two commands of Shabbos. (a) Ceasing from Melachah. (b) Delight. Both of them should be due to Hashem's command, and not for bodily pleasure. Here it says that your legs should cease Melachah due to Shabbos, and not due to your desire or pleasure.

2)

What does the verse teach about "Asos Chafatzecha"?

1.

Radak: All the more so, you will refrain from doing your desires on Shabbos. This includes Melachah for which one is Chayav Misah. Even going outside the Techum, which is a Lav, is severe to you, and you guard from it! It is as if it says me'Asos Chafatzecha; the prefix Mem in mi'Shabas applies also to Asos.

2.

Malbim: Refer to 58:13:3:2.

3)

Why does it say "b'Yom Kodshi"?

1.

Radak: I sanctified it - "va'Ykadesh Oso" (Bereishis 2:3). Kidush is separating it from other days.

2.

Malbim: You should turn your heart away from all worldly follies because it is Yom Kodshi - special for Kedushah and Avodas Hashem

4)

How will you call Shabbos a delight?

1.

Radak: "Im Tashiv mi'Shabas" is a Lav; "v'Karasa la'Shabbos Oneg" is an Aseh to make the body delight on Shabbos via good, tasty foods. Via making it better than other days, he remembers Ma'ase Bereishis, and that Hashem made the world from nothing, and ceased in the seventh day. Due to this, he praises and glorifies Hashem with his mouth and heart, and his Nefesh delights in it. V'Karasa is like Mikra Kodesh.

2.

Malbim: The delight should be because it is Shabbos.

5)

What is the meaning of "li'Kdosh Hashem Mechubad"?

1.

Radak #1: The matter is repeated in different words.

2.

Radak #2: This refers to Yom Kipur. One may not eat or drink; one honors it via clean clothing.

3.

Malbim: The honor [of Shabbos] is because Hashem was Mekadesh the day. If you guard it l'Shem Hashem, the honor will be great.

6)

What does "v'Chibadto me'Asos Derachecha" refer to?

1.

Radak citing Shabbos 113a:"V'Chibadto" teaches that your conduct 1 , e.g. clothing on Shabbos should be unlike on a weekday 2 . R. Yochanan called his garments 'Machbedosai (what honors me)'. "Me'Asos Derachecha" - do not walk on Shabbos like you walk on a weekday 3 .

2.

Radak: This honor is refraining from doing all Melachah. Derachecha are your desires and deeds, like "Derachai Siparti" (Tehilim 119:26), "u'Derachecha Lamchos Melachin" (Mishlei 31:3) and similar verses.

3.

Malbim: On Shabbos, do not even prepare Melachah for another day.

1

Radak: Also your eating and drinking on Shabbos should be unlike on a weekday. (Tanchuma Bereishis 2; this is not in Shabbos 113. - PF) Eat later or earlier than on a weekday.

2

113a: If he must wear the same garments on Shabbos, he wears them lower down [to show that he need not do Melachah].

3

113b: One may not take big steps on Shabbos. (Some permit during the week. Some forbid during the week, and on Shabbos there is also an Isur of Shabbos. Some say that it is always forbidden, and it diminishes eyesight. It can be restored if he took big steps during the week, but not if it was on Shabbos. - PF)

7)

What is "mi'Mtzo Cheftzecha"?

1.

Radak citing Shabbos 113a: Speaking about your desires is forbidden, but Shamayim's desires are permitted. Radak - one may make calculations for Mitzvos, apportion Tzedakah, arrange Kidushin or someone to teach a trade to his son. All of these are Mitzvos, even teaching a trade, lest he be a robber.

2.

Radak: This is a repetition of "me'Asos Derachecha" in different words.

3.

Radak citing Targum Yonasan: From supplying your needs.

4.

Malbim: The delight on Shabbos should not be of the body, rather, of the Nefesh.

8)

What do we learn from "v'Daber Davar"?

1.

Radak citing Shabbos 113a: Your speech on Shabbos should not be like your speech on a weekday 1 . Radak - on Shabbos you should speak b'Nachas (softly) and minimize words. "Davar" - [some] speech is forbidden, but thoughts are permitted. Some Chasidim were careful not to think about their desire on Shabbos, only Shamayim's desires, like the episode in Shabbos (150a. A Chasid's fence was breached. He decided to fix the fence, then remembered that it is Shabbos. He refrained from fencing it afterwards. Miraculously, a caper bush grew there to close the opening. Its fruits financed him and his household.)

2.

Targum Yonasan: [Do not] speak words of Onas. Radak - Onas is the Targum of Aven (sin). This is forbidden even during the week!

3.

Malbim: Do not speak secular matters. Engage only in Avodas Hashem.

1

Tosfos (113a): One may not talk idly (Rashi - about business).
