Why is there screaming in Choronayim?

Malbim: "Bericheha Ad Tzo'ar Eglas Shelishiyah Ki Ma'ale ha'Luchis bi'Vchi Ya'aleh Bo Ki Derech Choronayim Za'akas Shever Ye'o'eru" (Yeshayah 15:5). Those who flee will flee until Tzo'ar and not fight, for on the descent of Choronayim they were stricken in war. The refuges who ascended to the ascent of Luchis already cried over the great destruction below in Choronayim.
