Seeing as the Torah already taught the current Mitzvos in Mishpatim, 23:14-19, why does it repeat them here?

1.

Rashi: The Torah often repeats Mitzvos, sometimes as much as three or four times, to render the perpetrator Chayav (punishable) for as many Lavin or Mitzvos Asei as the number of times they are repeated. 1

1

Unless it repeats it to teach us something - For example, refer to 34:26:3:1.

2)

"Yera'eh Kol Zechurcha". What are the connotations of "Yera'eh"?

1.

R. Bachye #1: Based on the fact that the Shechinah appeared in the form of a cloud which reflected all those who came to the Beis-Hmikdash, it exempts someone who is blind, lame, sick, old, or someone who cannot walk on foot to the Beis-Hamikdash, from Re'iyah - since it is not Kavod that they should be reflected in the cloud containing the Shechinah. 1

2.

R. Bachye #2: It exempts someone who is blind in one eye from Re'iyah, because "Yir'eh" Yera'eh" - Just as Hashem comes to see with two Eyes, so too must He be seen with two eyes. 2 3

See R. Chavel's footnotes.

2

See R. Chavel's footnotes.

3

R. Bachye: Like Avraham, who used the same two expressions regarding the Beis-Hamikdash i- n Bereishis 22:14 - "Hashem Yir'eh" ... "be'Har Hashem Yera'eh".

3)

"Yera'eh Kol Zechurcha". What are the connotations of "Kol Zehurcha"?

1.

Rashi: It means (not all your males 1 but) 'all the males among you'.

2.

R. Bachye: It implies the males, but not the females who are Patur fro the Mitzvah of Re'iyas Panim.

1

See Sifsei Chachamim.

4)

Why does the Torah refer to Hashem as "ha'Adon Hashem"?

1.

Seforno: It refers to Hashem as Master of our material needs, which the current Parshah is discussing, 1 whereas "Elokei Yisrael", refers to the resulting life in the world to come. 2

2.

Rashbam (in Mishpatim, Sh'mos, 23:17): This title always applies to Hashem when he expels some people from the land and installs others.

1

Refer to 34:18:2:1.

2

See Seforno.

5)

Why does the Torah add the words "Elokei Yisrael" - which it did not do in Mishpatim, Sh'mos, 23:17?

1.

Seforno: Refer to 34:23:2:1.

2.

Oznayim la'Torah: Because in the interim, Moshe had Davened to Hashem that the Shechinah should not rest on any nation than Yisrael, 1 at which point He became known as 'the G-d of Yisrael'.

1

Refer to 33:17:1:1.

6)

What is the reason for the Mitzvah of Aliyah le'Regel?

1.

Seforno: To thank Hashem for all the material benefits and the resulting life in the world to come. 1

1

Refer to 34:23:2:1.
