Why did they prostrate themselves before the Shechinah - something that they did not do on other occasions when the Shechinah appeared?

Oznayim la'Torah: a. To atone for having prostrated themselves before the Eigel, and b. they hoped thaqt, perhaps, this would encourage the Shechinah to return to the camp.
