Why did David instruct his messengers so?

Malbim: He appeased him (to encourage him to give to David) in three ways. (a) David honored him, and commanded to bless Naval. (b) He was indebted to David's men (verse 7). (c) It was proper to be gracious and do Chesed (verse 8).
