What is the significance of the Ashir and Oni meeting?

R. Yonah: The Ashir did not get his wealth via his strength and intellect. The Oni did not become poor due to weakness and lack of intellect. The Galgal (Mazal) encountered both of them and made them so. Therefore, the Ashir should not glorify himself over the Oni.

Malbim: This is why a good name is better than great wealth. Wealth is not a constant Kinyan, for the Ashir and Oni meet. They do not stand in one place, that he is always rich and he is always poor, and they never meet. Rather, they ascend and descend on a ladder. If initially when the Ashir ascended and the Oni descended they met (at one point they were equal) on the way. Later, the Ashir will descend and the Oni will ascend, for [wealth and poverty] are a wheel that rotates in the world; they will meet again. Hashem makes ladders - he lowers this one and raises this one (Bereishis Rabah 68:4). He constantly makes rich and poor; so He established conduct [of the world]. Unlike wealth, a good name will not be lost.

When a Rebbi (who has not yet learned everything) agrees to a Talmid's request to teach him, "Rash v'Ish Techachim Nifgashu Me'ir Einei Sheneihem Hashem" (29: 13; Hashem enlightens both of them). If the Rebbi refuses, "Oseh Chulam Hashem" - Hashem had made the Rebbi wise, but now He makes him foolish, and vice-versa for the Talmid.

Rashi: When an Oni asks an Ashir to finance him, and he answers harshly, Hashem makes all of them a new (status) - the Ashir becomes an Oni, and vice-versa.
