What is the definition of "Iyei ha'Avarim"?
Rashi and Rashbam: It is an area of ruins, 1 via which one crossed over Har N'vo to enter Eretz Cana'an.
Targum Onkelos and Targum Yonasan: It is desolate plains.
Hadar Zekenim (in Pasuk 10): "Iyei" is like 'Iyei' spelled with an Alef (which means 'islands'); 2 "ha'Avarim" is an expression of Evrah (anger). 3
Rashbam: As in Yirmiyah, 26:18 and in Michah, 1:6. Rashi: 'Iy? (of which only the 'Ayin' is a root letter) means a ruin, whch one sweeps with a broom - from the word "Ya'im" in Vayakhel, 38:3, meaning shovels - though Rashi does not know why that area was called ?Iyim'.
Bechor Shor: 'Alef ' and 'Ayin' are interchangeable. They were islands [in the river] used to cross it (one steps from one to the other).
The Hadar Zekenim does not explain why the islands were angry.
