What do we learn from "Rav Adam Yikra Ish Chasdo"?

Rashi: Many people trust in their lovers who promise them Chesed, and they call to them when they are in need. Ish Chesed is one who promises to do Chesed.

R. Yonah: Most people announce about their Chesed, and inform man of their virtuous deeds. Yikra is to announce and inform, like "v'Shemen Yemino Yikra" (27:16).

Malbim: Chesed is what one does not due to obligation or promise, only due to generosity of heart. Emunah is what one does due to obligation or promise. Seemingly, one who does Chesed, all the more so he should do Emunah! If he volunteers what he is not obligated, all the more so he will guard the obligation incumbent on him! However, man's nature shows the opposite! There are few people of Emunah. People do not do easily what is incumbent on them. They overcharge, swindle and touch others' money. However, when there is opportunity for Chesed, many are found to do it. This is because they do not do the good for itself, rather, for glory and praise; one who does Chesed is praised more [than an Ish Emunah]. Many do Chesed, in order to announce and inform about their Chesed.

Who is "Ish Emunim"?

Rashi: It is one who promises and fulfills.

R. Yonah #1: He covers his Tzedakah and hides his Chasadim - "Matan ba'Seser Yichpeh Af" (21:14), "v'Hatzne'a Leches Im Elokecha" (Michah 6:8).

R. Yonah #2: He is like a faithful servant to fulfill whatever his master commands. He does not switch or deviate - "Tzir Ne'eman l'Sholechav" (25:13). Perfection of the Mitzvah of Chesed and the act of Tzedakah is when it is hidden and covered. (a) He does not glorify himself over the recipient of the gift or Chesed, lest he shame him. (b) He should not glorify himself in his work, like it says about Torah 'do not make it a crown to be glorified from it' (Avos 4:5). This man has perfection of Mitzvos, i.e. Temimus. Therefore, the coming verse praises Temimus.

Malbim #1: It is one who does his obligation. It is hard to find such a person, for this does not lead to honor.

Malbim #2: It is one who does Chesed of Emes, i.e. covertly, without publicity. Such people are not found, for the root of all deeds is love of honor and reward.
