Radak: It is the [giant] Pelishti camp.

Malbim: As long as the camp is in order, it is called Machaneh, Tzeva or Am. Amidst the panic, all order dissolved. Then they are called Hamon, due to their disorderly multitude.

What is the meaning of "va'Yelech va'Halom"?

Radak: This is like "v'Halmah Sisera" (Shoftim 5:26), i.e. being broken.

Malbim: Some went Halah (distanced themselves), and some approached Giv'ah. Amidst panic, they go in diverse directions. This created a Safek - is this fleeing, or preparation for war?
