What did Moshe mean when he said "P'nu u'Se'u ha'Midbarah Derech Yam-Suf"?
Rashi: He meant that, instead of traversing the width of Edom from south to north to enter Eretz Cana'an, they were to retrace their steps, to return towards the Yam-Suf 1 , and travel along the south of Har Se'ir, from west to east.
Oznayim la'Torah: The Yam'Suf is divided into two sections, the western section - close to Egypt (next to Ra'amses), which they had crossed after leaving Egypt and the eastern section (next to Eilat and Etzyon-Gaver), where they had never been before and where Hashem now commanded them to hed towards. 2
QUESTIONS ON RASHI
Rashi writes that we should have traversed the width of Edom to enter Eretz Cana'an. But Edom did not allow us to pass through their land (Chukas Bamidbar, 20:18), and we were not allowed to fight them (Devarim, 2:5)?
