What does my Nefesh love?

Rashi: Ru'ach ha'Kodesh returns and compares her to a flock dear to the shepherd. Keneses Yisrael says to Him, like a wife to her husband, tell me what my Nefesh loves (refer to 1:7:2:1).

Seforno: The author begins with Yerushalayim's words to Him, and His response, like an abandoned beloved speaks to her beloved. You, Hashem, are what my soul loves.

Malbim (Melitzah): The Heavenly lover speaks to her supreme Beloved, who stands in back of her walls. Since now she cannot be isolated with him in a prophetic clinging, due to powers of physicality that darken for her, she asks Him to tell her His place. I.e. teach her how to understand His truth via investigation.

What is the significance of "Eichah Sir'eh Eichah Tarbitz ba'Tzaharayim"?

Rashi: Where do you graze your flock among these wolves that they are among them, and where do you make the flock lie dwellings of Nochrim in the afternoon, in this Galus, which is a time of affliction for them, like afternoon is a time of affliction for flock (due to the heat).

Seforno: Even though the deeds are ruined, tell me where You graze (teach) the Talmidim intellect, and how you make the commoners submissive under the Chachamim, and conduct according to them, e.g. when there are two luminaries that argue in Halachah, and each gives a proper reason to illuminate his words, like [the noon sun] illuminates half in the east and half in the west. [They argue] because "I did not guard my vineyard" (6) - they did not serve [their Rebbeyim] as much as needed.

Malbim (Melitzah): The great Shepherd, sometimes He is Ro'eh [the flock] and sometimes He is Marbitz. Hashem is Ro'eh His flock, i.e. His legions and creations and all the living, sometimes He conducts them via Hashgachah, not via nature, Mazal and other conductors. Rather, it is via His Hashgachah Peratis. He apportions influence to each according to his lack. Sometimes when the generation does not merit, He conducts them according to nature, Mazal and enforcers of Shamayim that He made in the six days of creation. This is called Marbitz. They do not get new influence and life sustenance, rather, He conducts them to survive on what they already received. When nature and Mazalos rule, there is no new influence. This is in Tzaharayim, when the Mazalos and sun (the head of the enforcers of Shamayim) have the strongest rule.

Malbim (Mashal): The lover speaks to her beloved in back of the wall. Since now she cannot be isolated with him due to Bnos Yerushalayim, who guard, she asks him to tell her where she can find him when she can flee the king's palace. Sometimes a shepherd grazes the flock, and sometimes he makes it lie down, in the afternoon, when he cannot graze it due to the heat of the sun. When grazing, each shepherd grazes [his flock] in his own place. At a time of Revitzah, all shepherds gather t a shady place to lie them down, to rest a little.

What is the meaning of "Shalamah Ehyeh k'Oteyah"?

1.

Rashi: If you will say that you do not care - it is not honorable for you that I (your wife) am like a mourner who covers the lip, crying over my flock.

Seforno: I am like one whose lip is covered. I do not know whom to ask, and he will properly inform me.

3.

Malbim (Melitzah): This is a Ma'amar Musgar (parenthetical comment). Why should I be covered with a cloud among shadows of the body (Beis Shlomo)? I am used to growing wise, knowing and doing many deeds!

Malbim (Mashal): This is a Ma'amar Musgar. Why am I here, covered and torn 1 , under the curtains of Shlomo? I am used to being free in Sharon or mountains of Basar (2:1, 17)!

Malbim (Mashal): Oteyah hints to covering - Oteh Me'il, and to a tearing bird (Ayat).

What is "Al Edrei Chaverecha"?

1.

Rashi: It is by the flocks of the other shepherds. They tend flocks like you do. I.e. among the troops of other nations who rely on other gods; they have kings and officers who conduct them.

2.

Seforno: The flocks of those colleagues who argue, and their Talmidim, who are Yours. They say that both of these are the words of the living G-d.

3.

Malbim (Melitzah): When Hashem is Ro'eh, He Himself oversees everything. When He is Marbitz, other shepherds are by Him, i.e. stars and supreme officers who are Marbitz their flocks, each according to his appointment.
