1)

Whom do they want to swallow?

1.

Rashi: The Nekiyim, while they are alive.

2.

Malbim: It says "Nitzpenah l'Naki Chinam" (11) - then they do not kill them, for they do not fight them. They are swallowed alive into the grave, i.e. they and their money. They will remain alive to be to them permanent slaves. The land will open its mouth to swallow [the Rasha] and all his property, like happened to Korach.

2)

What is the comparison to the grave?

1.

Rashi: It swallows the entire body intact.

2.

R. Yonah: They will be as if they are not, like the grave swallows the dead. An Oni is considered like dead (Nedarim 64b).

3.

Malbim: Refer to 1:12:4:2.

3)

Who are "Temimim"?

1.

Rashi: This is not an expression of Tzadikim, rather, complete - they are swallowed whole, like one who descends into a pit. I.e. we will kill them while they are rich, and 'inherit' their property.

2.

R. Yonah: It is a higher level than Maki, like will be explained. A person's nature is to hate one opposite to him. The verses teach that Resha'im hate the Naki and Tam - "Anshei Damim Yisne'u Sam" (29:10). This is one of the things that one who rebukes must inform first a youth and an adult, lest they believe the Resha'im who speak Sheker about a Tzadik. When the listeners will know that the Resha'im hate Tzadikim, they will realize that they hate the Tzadik's attribute, and lie about him.

3.

Malbim: Refer to 1:12:4:2.

4)

What is the comparison to descending into a pit?

1.

R. Yonah: They descend whole.

2.

Malbim: Because they ambush them and kill them, they are swallowed totally, like those who descend dead into a pit. Even though they are not alive, they are Temimim, i.e. we will take all their wealth, like one who descends to the grave and leaves all his wealth to his heirs.
