(Mishnah): The following items must be announced - Produce in a utensil or a utensil itself, money in a pouch or a pouch itself, piles of produce, piles of money, 3 coins piled up, bundles in a private domain, loaves of a private baker, shearings of processed wool, jugs of wine and jugs of oil.

(Gemara - Rav Yehudah): The Mishnah is referring to 3 coins with images of 3 different kings (for it to be considered an identifying mark).

R. Elazar: Even if all 3 coins were from one king but with 3 widths with the widest at the bottom of the pile. This means 3 different kings with 3 widths or even one king with 3 widths.

R. Yochanan: If the jugs of wine or oil were arranged like a 'matzuvah', he does not need to announce them.

What is a 'matzuvah'? Like dwellings of 3 people built in a triangle - since he does not know to whom to return it, he is not required to announce it.

R. Yosi: We learn from the following story - there was once a person walking behind R. Chalafta. A dinar coin fell from one of them. Since it was unclear to whom it had to be returned, it did not need to be returned.

Shimon bar Vava was once walking behind R. Elazar. A dinar fell from R. Elazar. Shimon handed it back to him. R. Elazar said, "I had already given up hope!'' They said - R. Elazar's intent was to give it to Shimon because he was poor (but one cannot learn the law from this case).

(Mishnah): If he found tied chicks behind a wooden or stone fence or in the paths of the fields, he should not touch them.

If he found a vessel in the garbage dump, if it is covered he should not touch it; if it is exposed he should take it and announce it.

If he found it in a pile of stones or in an old wall, he may keep it.

If he found it in a new wall (of a house), from the middle outwards, he may keep it; from the middle inwards, it belongs to the house owner. If the owner rents it to others, even if he found it inside the house, he may keep it (as the Gemara will explain).

(Gemara - Rav Yehudah): (When the Mishnah taught that if he found tied chicks, he should not touch them,) it is only when their wings are tied.

R. Ba bar Zavda found covered wine in a leather bottle and he took it. Rav told him that he had not acted correctly (as the owner was certainly planning to return for it).

Question (R. Ba): Should I return it?

Rav: No, as we say that the owner might have come back and found it missing and given up hope of retrieving it. (Rather, you should take it home and if there is an identifying mark you should announce it and if not, you should put it aside until Eliyahu HaNavi comes.)

Beraisa: If he found it in a garbage dump, he must announce it as it is normal for a garbage dump to be emptied (and it will be lost if he does not take it and announce it). If he found it in a pile of stones or an old wall, he may keep it, as one could say that it dates back to the time of the Amorites.
