1)

(a)Which two Kohanim now begin ascending the steps leading to the Ulam? How many steps are there?

(b)Which two Kohanim walk ahead of them?

(c)What does the Kohen who merited the Dishun Mizbe'ach ha'Ketores then do?

1)

(a)The two Kohanim - who are holding the Kaf (containing the Ketores) and the Machtah (containing the coals) now begin ascending - the steps leading to the Ulam (See Tosfos Yom Tov).

(b)The two Kohanim - one who merited clearing the Mizbe'ach ha'Ketores, the other, the Menorah, walk ahead of them.

(c)The Kohen who merited the Dishun Mizbe'ach ha'Ketores - then picks up the Teni (containing the ashes) prostrates himself and leaves.

2)

(a)What does the Kohen who merited the Dishun ha'Menorah do, assuming he finds ...

1. ... the two eastern lamps still burning?

2. ... the Ner Ma'aravi extinguished?

(b)Either way, what does he do next?

2)

(a)The Kohen who merited the Dishun ha'Menorah, assuming he finds ...

1. ... the two eastern lamps still burning - extinguishes the extreme eastern one (See Tosfos Yom Tov).

2. ... the Ner Ma'aravi extinguished - he cleans it out and re-kindles it.

(b)Either way - he then picks up the Kuz from the second step, prostrates himself and leaves.

3)

(a)From where does the latter Kohen take a light to kindle the Ner Ma'aravi in the event that he finds it extinguished?

(b)How do we learn this from the Pasuk in Tzav "Eish Tamid Tukad al ha'Mizbe'ach Lo Sichbeh"?

(c)What is the significance of the two Kohanim prostrating themselves before exiting?

3)

(a)In the event that the latter Kohen finds the Ner Ma'aravi extinguished, he takes a light to kindle it - from the Mizbe'ach ha'Olah.

(b)We learn this from the Pasuk in Tzav "Eish Tamid Tukad al ha'Mizbe'ach Lo Sichbeh" - which we interpret to mean that the fire in connection with which the Torah writes "Tamid" ("le'Ha'alos Ner Tamid") must be lit from the Mizbe'ach ha'Chitzon (See Tosfos Yom Tov).

(c)The two Kohanim prostrate themselves before exiting - because that is what every Kohen does upon the completion of an Avodah.

4)

(a)What does the Kohen who merited the Machtah now do?

(b)How does he then flatten the pile on the Mizbe'ach?

(c)Why is this necessary?

(d)To tell us this, the Tana uses the word 'u'Redadan'. What is the source for this in the Torah?

4)

(a)The Kohen who merited the Machtah now - piles the coals from the Machtah on to the Mizbe'ach ha'Penimi (See Tosfos Yom Tov).

(b)He then flattens the pile on the Mizbe'ach - using the base of the Machtah ...

(c)... to avoid the Ketores (which is about to be placed on it) from falling off the pile.

(d)To tell us this, the Tana uses the word 'u'Redadan'. The source of this word is Unk'lus translation of "va'Yerak'u" - "u'Redidu" (and he beat flat [in the Pasuk in Tzav "va'Yerak'u es Pachei ha'Zahav"].

5)

(a)In what way does the Avodas ha'Ketores on Yom Kipur differ from the daily Avodas ha'Ketores that we just discussed?

(b)What does the Kohen do before exiting the Heichal?

5)

(a)The Avodas ha'Ketores on Yom Kipur differs from the daily Avodas ha'Ketores that we just discussed - in that the Kohen Gadol places the Ketores together with the pan in front of the Aron ha'Kodesh.

(b)Before exiting the Heichal, the Kohen - prostrates himself.

6)

(a)What does the Kohen who merited the Ketores do with the Bazach which he now takes from inside the Kaf?

(b)What happens to the Ketores which has (inevitably) spilt into the Kaf?

6)

(a)The Kohen who merited the Ketores now - takes the Bazach from inside the Kaf and hands it to his friend or relative (who accompanied him into the Heichal for this purpose).

(b)The Kohen with the Kaf pours the Ketores which has (inevitably) spilt into the Kaf - into the palms of the Kohen who merited the Ketores (See Tosfos Yom Tov).

7)

(a)How must he be careful to arrange the coals on the Mizbe'ach?

(b)What would happen if he were to arrange the pile on the east side next to where he is standing, and to brush the Ketores that is on the west inwards on to the pile?

(c)Why is it necessary to teach him this?

(d)How does the Beraisa in Yoma describe this?

(e)Why does he draw out this simple Avodah to such an extent?

7)

(a)He must be careful to arrange the coals on the Mizbe'ach - on the side that is furthest away from him (brushing the Ketores on the rest of the Mizbe'ach from the east outwards) ...

(b)... because if he were to arrange the pile on the east side next to where he is standing, and to brush the Ketores that is on the west inwards on to the pile - he would get burned from the smoke, as it rises from the pile.

(c)It is necessary to teach him this - because, as we learned earlier, it is the first (as well as his last) time that he will perform this Avodah).

(d)The Beraisa in Yoma describes this by stating - 'He piles this on the inside, which is the furthest away from him'.

(e)He draws out this simple Avodah to such an extent - because it is a Kavod for the Avodah to do so.

8)

(a)When does the Kohen begin to burn the Ketores?

(b)What does the Memuneh add if it is the Kohen Gadol who is bringing it?

(c)Based on the Pasuk in Acharei-Mos "ve'Chol Adam Lo Yih'yeh be'Ohel Mo'ed ad Tzeiso", which area must all Kohanim exit before the Kohen burns the Ketores?

(d)How does this ruling affect the Matan Damim of the Par Kohen Mashi'ach, of the Par He'elam Davar shel Tzibur and the Se'irei Avodas-Zarah, when they are brought?

(e)Why, during the burning of the Ketores on Yom Kipur, do they only need to leave the Heichal, but not the area between the Ulam and the Mizbe'ach?

8)

(a)The Kohen begins to burn the Ketores - when the Memuneh says to him 'Hakter'.

(b)If it is the Kohen Gadol who is bringing it - the Memuneh addresses him as 'Ishi Kohen Gadol'.

(c)Based on the Pasuk in Acharei-Mos "ve'Chol Adam Lo Yih'yeh be'Ohel Mo'ed ad Tzeiso", before the Kohen burns the Ketores. all Kohanim must exit - the area between the Ulam and the Mizbe'ach (as well as from the Heichal and the Ulam).

(d)This ruling affects the Matan Damim of the Par Kohen Mashi'ach, of the Par He'elam Davar shel Tzibur and the Se'irei Avodas-Zarah, when they are brought inasmuch as - the same Din applies to the Kohen who brings them.

(e)During the burning of the Ketores on Yom Kipur, however, they only need to leave the Heichal, but not the area between the Ulam and the Mizbe'ach - since it is performed inside the Kodesh Kodshim, as opposed to previous Avodos, which are brought in the Heichal.

9)

(a)When does the Kohen who burns the Ketores leave the Heichal?

(b)What does he do before leaving?

9)

(a)The Kohen who burns the Ketores leaves the Heichal - as soon as he has arranged the Ketores ('Hischil Meraded' [See Tosfos Yom Tov & Tiferes Yisrael]).

(b)Before leaving - he prostrates himself.
