1)

(a)Why does the Mishnah declare Tamei a bottle of Mei Chatas that one leaves open and later finds covered?

(b)Why does the Tana not issue the same blanket ruling with regard to the reverse case (where one leaves it covered and later finds it open)?

1)

(a)The Mishnah declares Tamei a bottle of Mei Chatas that one leaves open and later finds it covered - because only a person would have covered it, and the majority of people are Tamei for Chatas.

(b)The Tana does not issue the same blanket ruling with regard to the reverse case (where one leaves it covered and later finds it open) - because people generally cover water (as a protection against vermin), but do not uncover it. Consequently, the water must have become uncovered by an animal (in an attempt to drink it [see also Tos Yom-Tov]).

2)

(a)The Tana invalidates the latter case however, if a weasel could have drunk from it. What does the Tana add according to Rabban Gamliel?

(b)He also invalidates it if dew fell during the night. Why is that (see Tiferes Yisrael)?

(c)What will be the status of the Mei Chatas in the event that one leaves it open and later finds it open?

(d)How do we reconcile this with the ruling that prohibits drinking even Chulin water?

2)

(a)The Tana invalidates the latter case only if a weasel - or a snake, according to Rabban Gamliel [as we learned in the previous Perek] see also Tos. Yom-Tov) could have drunk from it.

(b)He also invalidates it if dew fell during the night - seeing as even spring water that has not been designated for Mei Chatas renders it Pasul (Tiferes Yisrael).

(c)In the event that one leaves the Mei Chatas open and later finds it open - it is Kasher ...

(d)... despite the ruling that prohibits drinking even Chulin water - because of the principle Chamira Sakanta me'Isura (life-danger is more stringent than Isur [see Tos. Yom-Tov]).

3)

(a)The Mishnah now discusses Mei Chatas lying inside a vessel that is covered by a sealed lid. What is the case?

(b)The Tana actually invalidate Chatas. What does that incorporate?

(c)He validates however, Mei Chatas that have not been mixed. What if the sealed vessel contains ...

1. ... Keilim that have been designated for any of the above?

2. ... the hyssop twig that has been designated to be used for sprinkling the Mei Chatas?

(d)From where does he learn the basic Chumra?

3)

(a)The Mishnah now discusses Mei Chatas lying inside a vessel that is covered by a sealed lid - where the earthenware vessel is lying inside an Ohel ha'Meis.

(b)The Tana actually invalidate Chatas - incorporating ashes of the Parah and Mei Chatas that has been mixed with ashes.

(c)He validates however, Mei Chatas that have not been mixed ...

1. ... Keilim that have been designated for any of the above, and ...

2. ... the hyssop twig that has been designated to be used for sprinkling the Mei Chatas (see Tos. Yom-Tov).

(d)He learns the basic Chumra - from the fact that Pasuk writes "ve'Hini'ach be'Makom Tahor", and this is not considered a Makom Tahor.

4)

(a)What is the definition of ...

1. ... Safek Tahor li'Terumah?

2. ... Taluy li'Terumah?

(b)What are the equivalent rulings regarding Chatas?

(c)If one actually went ahead and used ashes that are Taluy li'Terumah, and the person who has been sprinkled subsequently performs Taharos, what is the status of those Taharos?

4)

(a)The definition of ...

1. ... Safek Tahor li'Terumah - is Terumah that became Safek Tamei and that the Kohen is permitted to eat; whereas ...

2. ... Taluy li'Terumah - refers to a case where he is permitted neither to eat it or to burn it, but to put it aside, out of harm's way.

(b)The equivalent rulings regarding Chatas are - Tahor in the first case, but in the second, Nishpach (it must be poured out).

(c)If one actually went ahead and used ashes that are Taluy li'Terumah, and the person who has been sprinkled subsequently performs Taharos - those Taharos have a Din of Taluy.

5)

(a)What status does the Mishnah ascribe to Refafos (wooden netting)? Why is that?

(b)R. Eliezer rules that Re'ados are Tamei for Chatas. What are Re'ados? Why are they so-called?

(c)On what grounds does he consider them Keilim?

(d)The Chachamim disagree with R. Eliezer. Like whom is the Halachah?

5)

(a)The Mishnah declares Refafos (wooden netting) - Tahor la'Kodesh, la'Terumah ve'la'Chatas, because it is not considered a K'li (see Tiferes Yisrael).

(b)R. Eliezer rules that Re'ados - wooden posts that are tied loosely together to form a wall that wobbles) are Tamei for Chatas, so-called based on the Ro'ed - to shake).

(c)He considers them Keilim - because people sometimes sit on them, and they are subject to Tum'as Moshav.

(d)The Chachamim disagree with R. Eliezer and the Halachah is - like them.

Mishnah 3

6)

(a)The Tana now discusses Mei Chatas into which dried figs (see Tos. Yom-Tov) fell and which someone subsequently withdraws and eats. On what condition does the water become Tamei (even if the figs are Tahor)?

(b)Why is a Kohen who eats the figs Chayav Misah (bi'Yedei Shamayim).

(c)What will be the Din (in both regards) if the figs did not measure a k'Beitzah (see Tiferes Yisrael)?

(d)What is the reason for the latter ruling?

6)

(a)The Tana now discusses Mei Chatas into which dried figs (see Tos. Yom-Tov) fell and which someone subsequently withdraws and eats. The water becomes Tamei (even if the figs are Tahor) - provided they measure a k'Beitzah.

(b)A Kohen who eats the figs is Chayav Misah (bi'Yedei Shamayim) - because they in turn, became Tamei through their contact with the Mei Chatas, and a Kohen who eats Tamei Terumah is Chayav Misah (see Tos. Yom-Tov).

(c)If the figs did not measure a k'Beitzah - the water remains Tahor, but the Kohen is nevertheless Chayav Misah, the Tiferes Yisrael explains ...

(d)... because he became Tamei by touching the Mei Chatas on the figs.

7)

(a)R. Yossi disagrees with the above (basic) ruling. What does he say in a case where the figs that fall into the Mei Chatas are Tahor? Why is that?

(b)What does the Mishnah finally rule regarding someone who enters Mei Chatas with his head and most of his body?

(c)Why is that?

(d)Like whom is the Halachah?

7)

(a)R. Yossi disagrees with the above (basic) ruling. In a case where the figs that fell into the Mei Chatas were Tahor, he rules that - the water remains Tahor, because he holds in principle that someone who is Tahor for Terumah does not render Mei Chatas Tamei.

(b)The Mishnah finally rules that someone who enters Mei Chatas with his head and most of his body - becomes Tamei ...

(c)... because one the eighteen decrees (that are cited in Shabbos) is that anyone who enters Mayim She'uvim (a gathering of drawn water) becomes Tamei (see Mishnah Acharonah).

(d)The Halachah is - like the Tana Kama.

8)

(a)The Mishnah now discusses anyone who requires Tevilah min ha'Torah. Whom does that incorporate?

(b)What does the Tana say about them? Which two things does he declare Tamei, besides Kodesh and Terumah?

(c)What category of Tum'ah do they become?

(d)What does Ma'aser mean in this context?

(e)What prohibition does the Tana add to the list?

8)

(a)The Mishnah now discusses anyone who requires Tevilah min ha'Torah - incorporating anyone (or anything [see Mishnah Achronah DH 've'Asur al Bi'as Mikdash]) who touches an Av ha'Tum'ah.

(b)The Tana declares Tamei (a Sheini) Kodesh, Terumah - Chulin and Ma'aser (see Tos Yom-Tov).

(c)They all become a Sheini le'Tum'ah (though Terumah can still become a Shelishi, and Kodshim, a Revi'i).

(d)Ma'aser in this context, means - Ma'aser Sheini (as Ma'aser is no different than Chulin).

(e)The Tana adds to the above list- the prohibition of entering the Mishkan.

9)

(a)What does R. Meir mean when he rules that, once he Tovels he is still Metamei Kodesh but only renders Terumah, Pasul?

(b)In which point do the Chachamim, who are slightly more lenient than R. Meir, disagree with him?

(c)What about ...

1. ... Chulin and Ma'aser?

2. ... entering the Mikdsah (and eating Kodesh [see Meleches Shlomoh])?

9)

(a)When R. Meir rules that, once he Tovels he is still Metamei Kodesh but only renders Terumah, Pasul (see Tos. Yom-Tov), he means that - a T'vul-Yom renders Kodesh a Shelishi, and Terumah, a Revi'i.

(b)The Chachamim, who are slightly more lenient than R. Meir, maintain that - he also only renders Kodesh, Pasul (and not Tamei [see Tos. Yom-Tov]).

(c)He is ...

1. ... permitted to eat Chulin and Ma'aser (which are not affected at all by a T'vul-Yom), but ...

2. ... Chayav Kareis for entering the Mikdsah ([see Tos. Yom-Tov] and eating Kodesh [see Meleches Shlomoh]), both before and after he Tovels (see also Tos. Yom-Tov).

10)

(a)The Mishnah now discusses someone who requires Tevilah mi'de'Rabbanan. What might be an example of that?

(b)The Tana rules that, whoever requires Tevilah mi'de'Rabbanan is Metamei Kodesh and is Metamei Terumah. What does R. Meir say about Ma'aser and Chulin?

(c)The Chachamim, who are slightly more stringent, disagree. What do they say?

(d)And what does the Mishnah say about the same person ...

1. ... once he has Toveled?

2. ... who enters the Mikdash?

10)

(a)The Mishnah now discusses someone who requires Tevilah mi'de'Rabbanan, such as - if he ate Tamei food or drank Tamei liquids, if he did not wash his hands (S'tam Yadayim) or vessels that touched Tamei liquids.

(b)The Tana rules that, whoever requires Tevilah mi'de'Rabbanan is Metamei Kodesh and is Metamei Terumah. According to R. Meir - he is permitted to eat Ma'aser and Chulin.

(c)The Chachamim, who are slightly more stringent in this case - forbid him to eat Ma'aser.

(d)The Mishnah rules that, if the same person ...

1. ... Tovels - he is permitted to eat even Terumah and Kodesh (see Tos. Yom-Tov).

2. ... enters the Mikdash - he is Patur (see Tos. Yom-Tov).

11)

(a)What does the Tana now say with regard to Mei Chatas or Eifer Chatas becoming Tamei through a person (or an object) who requires Tevilah ...

1. ... min ha'Torah?

2. ... mi'de'Rabbanan?

(b)What third item does the Mishnah add?

(c)On which two ways will he/it render them Tamei?

11)

(a)The Tana rules that - Mei Chatas and Eifer Chatas become Tamei, via a person (or an object) who requires Tevilah either ...

1. ... min ha'Torah or ...

2. ... mi'de'Rabbanan.

(b)The Mishnah adds to the list - someone who sprinkles the Mei Chatas (see Tiferes Yisrael).

(c)He/it renders them Tamei - either via touching or through carrying.

12)

(a)R. Meir and the Chachamim dispute a hyssop twig that has been Muchshar, water that has not yet been mixed with the ashes of the Parah and an empty vessel that is Tahor for Mei Chatas. What do they mean by a hyssop twig that has been Muchshar (see Tos. Yom-Tov)?

(b)R. Meir being the stricter of the two, what is the subject of their dispute?

12)

(a)R. Meir and the Chachamim now dispute a hyssop twig that has been Muchshar, water that has not yet been mixed with the ashes of the Parah and an empty vessel that is Tahor for Mei Chatas. By a hyssop twig that has been Muchshar (see Tos. Yom-Tov), they mean - one that became Muchshar via water that was Tahor for Mei Chatas (see Tos. Yom-Tov).

(b)The subject of their dispute is - whether they become Tamei via carrying (R. Meir) or only via actually touching it (the Chachamim).

13)

(a)Which sort of Eizov does the Mishnah disqualify from being used for sprinkling Mei Chatas?

(b)What does the Tana mean when he states Eizov Zeh, Kasher?

(c)What is the significance of Eizov Yon, Kuchlis, Romi & Midbari listed by the Mishnah?

13)

(a)The Mishnah disqualifies - from being used for sprinkling Mei Chatas, any Eizov that is qualified by an epithet.

(b)By Eizov Zeh, Kasher, the Tana means that - regular hyssop that is referred to S'tam as Eizov is eligible.

(c)Eizov Yon, Kuchlis, Romi & Midbari listed by the Mishnah - are simply examples of Eizov that is qualified by an epithet.

14)

(a)What sort of hyssop is subject to Terumah?

(b)What does the Mishnah say about using a hyssop twig that is ...

1. ... Terumah Teme'ah?

2. ... Terumah Tehorah?

(c)What is the reason for the latter ruling?

(d)And what if the Kohen does use it?

14)

(a)Garden hyssop that is picked as food - is subject to Terumah.

(b)The Mishnah rules that using a hyssop twig that is ...

1. ... Terumah Teme'ah - is forbidden

2. ... Terumah Tehorah - is preferably not used.

(c)The reason for the latter ruling is - because it is forbidden to spoil Terumah (or to be Machshir it for Tum'ah [Tiferes Yisrael]).

(d)If the Kohen did use it however - it is Kasher.

15)

(a)The Tana forbids the use of Yonkos or of Temaros. What are ...

1. ... Yonkos?

2. ... Temaros?

(b)What does the Mishnah say about someone who has been sprinkled with Yonkos?

(c)What does R. Eliezer add to that?

(d)Like whom is the Halachah?

15)

(a)The Tana forbids the use of ...

1. ... Yonkos - hyssop stalks that have not yet grown properly (whose blossoms have not yet emerged).

2. ... Temaros - a sort of berry that grows at the tip of the hyssop.

(b)The Mishnah rules that someone who has been sprinkled with Yonkos - is not (Tahor and is therefore not) Chayav for entering the Beis-Hamikdash (see Tos. Yom-Tov).

(c)R. Eliezer adds to this that - the same applies to someone who has been sprinkled with Temaros.

(d)The Halachah is - like the Tana Kama.

16)

(a)What does the Mishnah say about a hyssop-twig that has been used for the Parah Adumah? What is it still fit for?

(b)And what does the Tana say about a hyssop-twig that one picks for ...

1. ... firewood on which some water fell?

2. ... food and which dried?

(c)What is the reason for the latter ruling, bearing in mind that it has not actually become Tamei?

(d)According to R. Meir, if it has been picked for Mei Chatas it is as if it was picked for food (and is Pasul). What do the Chachamim say?

16)

(a)The Mishnah rules that a hyssop-twig that has been used for the Parah Adumah - is still fit to be used for purifying a Metzora.

(b)The Tana also rules that a hyssop-twig that one picks for ...

1. ... firewood on which some water fell - remains Kasher.

2. ... food and which dried - becomes Pasul ...

(c)... because, even though it has not actually become Tamei - it has become subject to Tum'ah (and that is sufficient by Mei Chatas [see Tos. Yom-Tov]).

(d)According to R. Meir, if it was picked for Mei Chatas it is as if it was picked for food (and is Pasul); whereas according to the Chachamim - it is as if it was picked for firewood (and is Kasher).

17)

(a)How many twigs of hyssop are needed for Mei Chatas?

(b)What is the source for the three stalks?

(c)According to the Tana Kama, each stalk requires one Giv'ol? What is a Giv'ol?

(d)What does R. Yehudah say?

17)

(a)Mei Chatas requires - three twigs of hyssop.

(b)We learn this - from "Agudas Eizov" (since 'Agudah' implies three) from Pesach Mitzrayim, with a Gezeirah-Shavah "Lekichah" "Lekichah".

(c)According to the Tana Kama, each stalk requires one Giv'ol - a capsule.

(d)R. Yehudah requires - each twig to have three capsules.

18)

(a)What is one supposed to do if one has a hyssop-twig with three stalks growing from one capsule?

(b)What if one ...

1. ... cuts them but omits to tie them together?

2. ... ties them together without cutting them?

18)

(a)If one has a hyssop-twig with three stalks growing from one capsule - one is supposed to cut them off and tie them together.

(b)In the event that one ...

1. ... cuts them but omits to tie them together or one ...

2. ... ties them together without cutting them - they are Kasher Bedi'eved (see Tos. Yom-Tov D.H. 'Sheloshah'.

19)

(a)What does the Tana Kama hold if there are only two twigs?

(b)With whom does R. Yossi concur in the Machlokes as to how many capsules each stalk requires?

(c)In which regard is he more stringent than the Tana Kama?

(d)Like whom is the Halachah?

19)

(a)The Tana Kama holds - that Bedi'eved, two twigs are Kasher (like Sheyarav).

(b)In the Machlokes as to how many capsules each stalk requires, R. Yossi concurs with the Tana Kama (that one is sufficient).

(c)He is more stringent than the Tana Kama however - regarding Bedi'eved, since he holds that two twigs are Pasul Bedi'eved.

(d)The Halachah is - like R. Yossi (see Tos. Yom-Tov).

20)

(a)R. Yossi also discusses the Shi'ur of Sheyarav. What does Sheyarav mean?

(b)What is the minimum Shi'ur of a hyssop-twig (Lechatchilah) that is required for Mei Chatas (see Tos. Yom-Tov)?

(c)Assuming that one began with three stalks, each measuring at least one Tefach, what does R. Yossi say about Sheyarav, regarding ...

1. ... the number of stalks?

2. ... the length of each stalk?

20)

(a)R. Yossi also discusses the Shi'ur of Sheyarav - the remains if the Shi'ur dimimished.

(b)The minimum Shi'ur of a hyssop-twig (Lechatchilah) that is required for Mei Chatas is - one Tefach (see Tos. Yom-Tov).

(c)Assuming that one began with three stalks, each measuring at least one Tefach, R. Yossi gives the Shi'ur of Sheyarav ...

1. ...(regarding the number of stalks) as - two.

2. ...(regarding the length of each stalk) as - Kol-she'Hu (a minimal amount).
