Malbim: They all died then; we find that he made a remembrance for his name, because he had no son (18:18). This increased his desire for kingship, to make a permanent remembrance for his name. 1

Since he was born when David was in Chevron, after Sha'ul died, he was at most 37 years old (refer to 15:7:1:1*). He could have fathered more sons! Perhaps women would not want to marry him due to his bad Mazal regarding children. (PF)
