Why does it say "va'Yelchu

Malbim: They constantly went after Sha'ul 1 to the war.

Sha'ul reigned only two years, and it seems that much of this was after this episode! Why did Malbim not say that they used to go constantly to the war, and not they went after Sha'ul? (PF)
