Why were Yisrael distressed?

Malbim (6, 7): (a) Pelishtim came close and camped against the cities; the land was already in their hands. (b) The people were hiding; Sha'ul's 1,000 men in Michmash hid amidst fear, and did not fight. (c) The Jews near the Yarden did not gather to help Sha'ul, rather, they fled to Ever ha'Yarden. (d) Sha'ul was still in Gilgal. He did not do anything to stop the enemy from capturing the cities.

What are "Chavachim"?

1.

Rashi: It is a place where thorns are gathered.

Radak citing Targum Yonasan: They are fortresses.

What are "Tzerichim"?

1.

Rashi: They are enclosures around which they bent [to make a fence of interwoven] trees and branches.

Rashi (Shoftim 9:46): They are pits. 1

Radak: They are high places, like "va'Yavo'u El Tzari'ach" (Shoftim 9:46), i.e. a tower (Radak there).

4.

Radak (Shoftim 9:46, citing Targum Yonasan): Tzari'ach Beis Kel is the name of a place.

The end of our verse mentions pits! Perhaps Tzerichim and Boros are different kinds of pits. (PF)
