Malbim: Initially, Aram and Mo'av ruled over them, who are not from the seven [Kena'ani] nations. Now Hashem delivered them over to a king of Kena'an, to fulfill "v'Hayu Lachem l'Tzidim" (2:3).

Yehoshua struck Chatzor!

Radak: Yavin ruled in Chatzor before Yehoshua struck the city and killed him. Remnants of the family went to Charoshes ha'Goyim and settled there, and they called the king Yavin, like the first king.

What is "Charoshes ha'Goyim"?

Rashi: It is the name of a [Malbim - fortified] city.

Radak: (It was a forest.) Charoshes is the Targum [Yonason] of Ya'ar (Devarim 19:5). In that forest were strong towers, and the remaining Kena'ani dwelled there.
