Radak: He was from Beis David. He was jealous that Gedalyah was appointed over the land.

Radak (from Yerushalmi Sanhedrin 2:3): He descended from converts, for Yerachmi'el married Atarah, like it says in Divrei ha'Yamim (I, 2:26); she was a Nochris princess. He married her to aggrandize himself - therefore she is called Atarah. va'Tehi Ishah Acheres li'Yrachmi'el u'Shmah Atarah Hi Em Ones" - she entered mourning into his house. Do not trust a convert for 24 generations (Yalkut Shimoni Rus 601); Yishmael was the 24th generation from Atarah. 1

Divrei ha'Yamim I, 2:26-41 lists generations from Atarah until Elishama. Radak (I, 2:26) is Mechadesh that that Elishama was Yishmael's grandfather, and how the count of generations is 24. (PF)

Rashi: They are the king's officers 1 . They were jealous that Gedalyah received authority.
