1)

What is "Pere"?

1.

Rashi: It is wild. Radak - this is like "Pere Adam" (Bereishis 17:12), with an Aleph at the end in place of a Hei 1 . "Pera'im ba'Midbar" (Iyov 24:5) are wild donkeys.

1

Radak (Melachim I, 11:17): Aleph, Hei, Vov and Yud are interchangeable.

2)

What is "Limud Midbar"?

1.

Rashi: It is used to being in the wilderness (Radak - a plain). It loves to roam.

3)

Why is it written Nafsho, and we pronounce it Nafshah?

1.

Radak: Pere refers to the species, and includes males and female, like Shor and Chamor - "va'Yhi Li Shor v'Chamor" (Bereishis 32:6). The verse treats it as masculine (Limud, Nafsho), but we pronounce it Nafshah, for in the rest of the verse it is feminine. Perhaps the female runs more than the male.

4)

What is the meaning of "Sha'afah Ru'ach"?

1.

Rashi: It opens its mouth and inhales. It always returns to its place.

2.

Radak: It smells, or draws air to the nose. It does so while running. Running depends on the sense of smell - "Lo la'Kalim ha'Merutz 1 " (Koheles 9:11). One must inhale to dispel the body's heat [generated through running]. Without this, one cannot move!

1

Seemingly, the verse teaches only that running depends on something other than the legs. Radak knows from biology that it depends on breathing. (PF)

5)

What is the meaning of "Ta'anasah"?

1.

Rashi #1: It has the Midah of Tanim 1 (dragons). Targum Yonasan is like this. It inhales.

2.

Rashi #2: This is an expression of wailing, like "Ta'aniyah va'Aniyah" (Eichah 2:5).

3.

Rashi #3: Its region. This is like "Ta'anas Shilo" (Yehoshua 16:6).

4.

Radak: This is causation, like "Inah l'Yado" (Shemos 21:23).

1

Rashi (Yeshayah 34:13)" This is an evil wild animal.

6)

Why does it say "Ta'anasah Mi Yeshivenah"?

1.

Rashi: It has the Midah of Tanim 1 . Who can change it from its way? Also you - who can return you from your evil way?!

2.

Radak: It runs to where it desires. No one can stop it or make it go back!

3.

Malbim: One who serves idolatry for benefit or pleasure, one can easily make him repent, through showing him that it will not bring to him any benefit or pleasure. However, one who sins due to love of the sin itself, without hope for anything else, one cannot make him repent. Sin is intrinsic to him. A philosopher said, one who engages in Zenus for money, he is intrinsically base, and is Mezanah by chance. If so, a harlot who is Mezanah for money, it is easy to make her stop if one gives to her her needs in her husband's house, or if one shows her that she should not take her hire from men. This does not apply to one who is Mizrachah not for money. Other animals move only for a need - to get what will help them, or flee damage. If one supplies its needs where it is, it ceases to run. The Pere intrinsically desires to run. Who can stop it?

1

Refer to 2:24:5:1 and the note there.

7)

Why will those who seek it not tire?

1.

Rashi: They [will not chase it, for they] would tire for no reason. They cannot catch it.

2.

Malbim #1: Those who seek to raise it in the house would tire without reason, for one cannot change its nature.

3.

Malbim #2: Those who seek it in its first month will not tire, for it submits, for it is not yet used to running.

8)

What is the meaning of "b'Chadshah Yimtza'unha"?

1.

Rashi: There is one month in the year that it sleeps the entire month; then it is caught. Also you, there is one month (Av) in which you are caught. This was fixed for you from your fathers from the days of the Meraglim, who cried for no reason (Sotah 35a).

2.

Radak #1: Some say that in the last month of its pregnancy, it is full and heavy, and then one can catch it. The same applies to Yisrael. Those who seek it are the Nevi'im, who rebuke it to repent, and they did not succeed. In the month when its sin is heavy on it and it falls, i.e. in Av, in which the Churban came, they will find it, and it will admit its sin only when it sees the Churban.

3.

Radak #2: Some say that this is like b'Chidushah. They always find it as if now it is beginning to run.

4.

Radak citing Targum Yonasan: They will find it in its time.

5.

Malbim: In the first month that it is born, it is easy to submit [and not run]. After a month, it is habituated, and one cannot change its nature.
