What was Balak's counsel?

1.

Malbim: He wanted Bil'am to prosecute against Yisrael and curse them.

2)

What did Bil'am answer [Balak]?

1.

Rashi: "U'Mah Ez'om Lo Za'am Hashem" (Bamidbar 23:8) ? I did not get angry all those days.

2.

Malbim: It is good in Hashem's eyes to bless Yisrael (Bamidbar 24:1), for Hashgachah clings to them for good. Via this, Bil'am counseled to make them sin with Bnos Mo'av ? via this, Hashem's Hashgachah will veer from them.

3)

Why does it specify "Min ha'Shitim Ad ha'Gilgal"?

1.

Rashi: You sinned against Me in ha'Shitim (with Bnos Midyan). Regarding Gilgal, refer to 6:5:4:1.

2.

Radak: You were liable for to be eradicated in Shitim ? you received Kaparah via some of the sinners (24,000) dying in a plague 1 . In Gilgal, Hashem brought you across the Yarden on the dry land.

3.

Malbim: From Shitim until Gilgal, Moshe explained the Torah, that Hashem does not want difficult Avodas and Korbanos. There was no difficult Avodah until they came to Gilgal and needed to circumcise ? that was hard!

What is the source that some sinners did not die? The Yerushalmi (Sanhedrin 10:2) says that judges executed 157,200 (who sinned with witnesses and warning). Presumably, the plague killed those who sinned without witnesses or warning! (PF)

4)

How does this teach "Tzidkos Hashem"?

1.

Rashi: I did not withhold from you My good and help, until I brought you to Gilgal, and I conquered the land in front of you.

5)

What is the consequence of knowing "Tzidkos Hashem"?

1.

Radak: You will improve your ways.
