Why did Belshatzar reward Daniel so greatly for such a dire prediction for his kingship?

Malbim: He thought that the prophecy will be fulfilled a long time in the future. He gave to Daniel a third of the kingdom, like he promised. He did not realize that it would be fulfilled that night! Chronicles say 1 that Anshei Bavel accepted Daryavesh to be their king.
