What function did the bolts serve?

Rashi (in Shabbos, 98a): To prevent the tall, heavy boards from wobbling, ¹ bearing in mind the fact that the boards were ten Amos tall and the sockets, only one Amah.

Reinforcing the rings on top of the boards (Refer to 36:24:3:1), which served the same purpose.
