Who should disguise himself?

1.

'Rashi', Rashi (Melachim I, 22:30): I (Achav) will disguise myself. Mahari Kara (ibid.) - Hischapes va'Vo are like Lehischapes Lavo (infinitives). Radak (ibid.) ? Yonason translates as if it says Eschapes (I will disguise myself).

QUESTIONS ON RASHI

2)

Rashi writes that only Achav will disguise himself. What is the reason?

1.

'Rashi' (Divrei ha'Yamim II, 18:29): He was concerned for the Navi's words 1 . He was concerned lest Aram heard the Nevu'ah, and will seek to kill only him 2 . Mahari Kara (Melachim I, 22:30) - he thought that he can evade Hashem's decree by disguising himself! Malbim (ibid.) - he thought that if he goes like a commoner, dressed like a commoner, at the time he is not a king and master over the army, this partially fulfills the Nevu'ah, and the rest will be Batel. Pharaoh saw "Ra'ah Neged Pneichem" (Shemos 10:10), and it was [partially fulfilled, and the rest was] nullified through blood of Bris Milah. The Egyptians saw that the savior of Yisrael will be stricken through water, and it was [partially fulfilled, and the rest was] nullified through Moshe being put in the river 3 . There are other examples; he thought that so will be with this Devar Hashem.

2.

Rashi (Melachim I, 22:30): If they recognize me, they will veer to me to fight [me]. You need not disguise yourself, for they have no conflict with you; they will not fight you.

If Achav was concerned for the Nevu'ah, he could have sent Yisrael to fight without him. Yehoshafat could lead them! Perhaps amidst hatred for Michah, he risked his life to prove that Michah was wrong. We find that Chananyah commanded his sons to delay his burial, to make it look like Yirmeyah's Nevu'ah was false (Rashi, Yirmeyah 28:17)! (PF)

2

Why should Aram be concerned for the Nevu'ah? Perhaps after the second war, they realized that Hashem is Elokim everywhere. If they heard that only Achav will die, they will put all their efforts only to kill him! Indeed, so happened (verse 30)! (PF)

3

Sotah 12b: When Moshe was put in the river, the astrologers ceased to see the Siman [that he will be punished via water]. They [erred and] thought that the decree was Batel. Really, it was fulfilled at Mei Merivah!
