SUMMARY

1. The Gemara discusses the case of a man who, on his deathbed, gave instructions to give his daughter in marriage to a certain man together with 400 Zuz.

2. There is a dispute about whether Beis Shamai argued regarding the law that Semichah must be done immediately before Shechitah.

3. There is a dispute about whether Beis Shamai argued about requiring Semichah for an Olah that one is obligated to bring.

4. The Gemara discusses a confrontation between Hillel and the students of Shamai regarding the performance of Semichah on an Olas Re'iyah.

5. The confrontation was ultimately resolved by a student of Beis Shamai.

A BIT MORE

1. Rav Papa says that the man automatically receives the 400 Zuz, since the words of a dying man are considered as if he had actually done the transaction. However, the recipient is not bound to marry the dying man's daughter, since the dying man did not first instruct that he should marry his daughter and only then receive the 400 Zuz.

2. Some say that Beis Shamai indeed argued about this (and Beis Shamai was lenient). Therefore, the conclusion is that one should not do Semichah on his Olas Re'iyah on Yom Tov, but rather before Yom Tov.

3. Some say that Beis Shamai maintains that Semichah is not required on obligatory Olos. This is in contrast to an Olah that one decides to donate.

4. The students of Shamai stopped Hillel when he was entering the Beis ha'Mikdash with a Korban, as they thought he might try to perform Semichah on Yom Tov on his Olas Re'iyah. Hillel bent the truth and told them that it was a Korban Shelamim in order to avoid a scene.

5. Bava ben Buta, who knew that the law really followed Hillel, brought a large amount of sheep into the Beis ha'Mikdash and proclaimed that anyone who wants may offer an Olas Re'iyah and perform Semichah on it. This ended the controversy regarding whether one may perform Semichah on an Olas Re'iyah on Yom Tov.
