12th Cycle Dedication

ERCHIN 10 (28 Teves) - Dedicated by Morris and Caroline Massel in loving memory of Morris' grandparents, Ezekiel and Sadie Massel z'l and Moses and Aziza Montefiore, all of whose Yahrzeits are in this season.

1. In the Mikdash, there were never fewer than 21 or more than 48 Teki'os on any given day.
2. The musical instrument known as the Chalil was used at the Mizbe'ach on 12 days a year.
3. On 18 days of the year the whole Hallel is recited.
4. We do not recite the whole Hallel (or sometimes even the half Hallel) on other days.
5. We do not recite Hallel at all on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

1. The Gemara explains that Rebbi Yehudah, who says that there were a minimum of 7 and a maximum of 21 Teki'os, counts a "Teki'ah, Teru'ah, Teki'ah" sequence as one (as opposed to the Tana of the Mishnah, who counts it as three).
2. These days were: Erev Pesach, Pesach Sheni, the first day of Pesach, Shavuos, and the eight days of Sukos.
3. These days are: Eight days of Sukos, eight days of Chanukah, the first day of Pesach, and the first day of Shavuos. There are three more days outside of Eretz Yisrael when the whole Hallel is recited: the second day of Sukos, the second day of Pesach, and the last day of Sukos.
4. The Gemara explains that since the Korbanos on the rest of the days of Pesach are the same each day, we do not recite the whole Hallel during the rest of Pesach. We do not recite Hallel on Shabbos because it is not called a "Mo'ed." We do not recite the whole Hallel on Rosh Chodesh because work is permitted on Rosh Chodesh.
5. Hashem explained this to the angels by saying, "Is it possible that the King is sitting on the throne of judgment and the books of life and death are open before him, and Bnei Yisrael should sing Hallel?"
