12th Cycle dedication

CHULIN 45 (10 Av) - Dedicated by Rabbi Dr. Eli Turkel of Ra'anana, Israel, in memory of his father, Reb Yisrael Shimon ben Shlomo ha'Levi Turkel. Isi Turkel, as he was known, loved Torah and worked to support it literally with his last ounce of strength. He passed away on 10 Av 5740.

SUMMARY

1. If the trachea is punctured like a sieve, or if there are deficiencies in the trachea that add up to the size of an Isar, the animal is a Tereifah.

2. If the trachea is punctured without any deficiencies, but the puncture holes add up to the majority of the trachea, the animal is a Tereifah.

3. If the skull of a Mes is missing a piece the size of a doctor's drill-bit, it is not Metamei b'Ohel.

4. If a piece of the trachea is cut out and it is still attached like a flap, and the section is large enough for an Isar to pass through it, the animal is a Tereifah.

5. If the trachea is split along its length and there are three rings remaining on top and bottom which were not split, the animal is Kosher, according to Rav. Rebbi Yochanan disagrees.

6. The entire neck is valid for Shechitah, from the upper ring of cartilage that encircles the trachea to the lower lobe of the lung.

7. If the trachea is punctured below the breast, it is regarded as a puncture of the lung and it is a Tereifah even with a minute puncture.

8. According to the first version of Rav and Shmuel, if the outer membrane of the brain is punctured, the animal is a Tereifah.

9. The part of the brain inside the cranium of an animal is treated like the brain. The part that extends out of the cranium is treated like the spinal cord.

10. If there is a puncture in the heart of the animal all the way through, or if the lung is punctured until the bronchi, the animal is a Tereifah.

11. If there is a puncture in the pipe of the heart which is on the walls of the lung, according to Rav the animal is a Tereifah with even a minute puncture. Shmuel disagrees.

12. Ameimar maintains that the pipe that leads from the trachea to the lung has the status of the lung, while the pipe that leads to the liver has the status of the liver. Mar bar Chiya maintains the opposite.

13. According to Rebbi, if the majority of the spinal cord is cut through, the animal is a Tereifah. Rebbi Yakov maintains that even a minute puncture renders the animal a Tereifah.

14. According to one version of Rav's statement, if most of the skin of the spinal cord is cut through, the animal is a Tereifah according to Rebbi. According to another version, if most of the nerve tissue inside the spinal cord was cut through, it is a Tereifah.

15. If the nerve tissue of the spinal cord was liquefied or softened, the animal is a Tereifah.

A BIT MORE

1. Similarly, if there is a strip of skin missing from the trachea that is the size of an Isar, the animal is a Tereifah.

2. If the trachea of a bird was punctured, we cut around the sides of the puncture holes making it into a flap. The flap is then folded over the mouth of the trachea. If the holes together with the skin between them cover the majority of the mouth of the trachea, the bird is a Tereifah.

3. If it is missing one long strip, or there are a number of puncture holes that add up to the size of a drill-bit, it is not Metamei b'Ohel.

4. Since the piece is still attached like a flap, if it is the size of an Isar the animal is Kosher. The animal is a Tereifah only if an Isar can be pushed through the perforation.

5. According to Rebbi Yochanan, if there is a minute amount on the top and bottom which was not split, it is not a Tereifah.

6. Rav explains that the Shechitah is valid when done until the lower lobe of the lung when it is hung by its hind legs, which is actually the upper lobe of the lungs when the trachea is held upright with the lung on the bottom.

7. The trachea below the breast is not a valid place for Shechitah. Therefore, it has the same status as the lung, and even a minute puncture renders the animal a Tereifah. This is in contrast to the upper part of the trachea; the animal is a Tereifah only when the majority of the upper part of the trachea is punctured.

8. According to the second version, the animal is a Tereifah only if the inner membrane was also punctured.

9. Even a minute puncture of the brain renders the animal a Tereifah. In contrast, only if the majority of the spinal cord is cut is the animal rendered a Tereifah.

10. An animal is a Tereifah only if a puncture in the lung goes through to the primary bronchi. In the case of a puncture in the heart, the animal is a Tereifah if the puncture goes through to any of the chambers.

11. According to Shmuel, the animal is a Tereifah only if the majority is punctured.

12. A punctured lung renders the animal a Tereifah with even a minute puncture. In contrast, only if a liver is completely removed is the animal considered a Tereifah.

13. However, Rav ruled according to the opinion of Rebbi Yakov.

14. According to the opinion that if most of the nerve tissue is cut through it is a Tereifah, certainly if most of the skin is cut through it is also a Tereifah. However, according to the opinion that if most of the skin is cut through it is a Tereifah, if most of the nerve tissue is cut through it is not a Tereifah.

15. If the nerve tissue is sufficiently softened so that if the spinal cord is held it will not stand upright, the animal is a Tereifah.
