SUMMARY

1. On Shabbos, one may not wear sandals with spikes.

2. This decree (#1) also applies to Yom Tov.

3. The sandal which is prohibited (#1) is only one which is fortified with nails, but not one that has nails just for style.

4. The Gemara discusses how many nails may be in the sandal for it to be considered part of the style.

5. If one covers the entire sandal with nails, unlike the sandal that was forbidden that was not covered entirely with nails, it is permitted.

A BIT MORE

1. This prohibition was enacted because of a tragedy which occurred during a time of persecution when many Jews hid in a cave. Thinking that the Romans outside the cave had discovered them, they stampeded from the cave and inadvertently killed each other with these spiked sandals. Since this occurred on a Shabbos, it was decreed that people may not wear these sandals on Shabbos.

2. The incident cited above (#1) did not happen on Yom Tov. However, since Yom Tov is also a time when people gather together and Melachah is forbidden, the decree was extended to Yom Tov as well.

3. If a sandal has protruding nails for style (adornment), it is permitted.

4. There are various opinions about how many nails constitute style, with the most stringent being up to five, and the most lenient being 24 (one version of Rebbi Chiya).

5. Only a sandal that is like the one worn during the tragic incident mentioned above (#1) is forbidden.
