If a woman wants to nurse her baby, she may do so even if her husband objects. (1)
If the husband wants his wife to nurse and she objects, if it is not the practice for either his or her family to nurse she is not obligated.
Even if a wife brings into the marriage two or three maidservants, she must do some Melachah, because the maidservants do not cover all of the work that must be done for the guests. (2)
Even if a wife brings in four maidservants, she must pour her husband's cup, make his bed, and wash his hands and feet.
A Nidah may do all Melachos for her husband with the exception of pouring his cup, making his bed, and washing his hands and feet. (3)
A person is not obligated to give a taste of the food to the waiter immediately, unless he is eating meat or drinking wine. (4)
A husband may not force his wife to serve his father or son, or to feed straw to his animal.
Rebbi Yehudah says that a husband may not force his wife to work with Roman flax.
If a wife plays with dogs or other types of entertainment. she will not go mad from boredom, but it can lead to Znus.
Beis Shamai: If a husband vows not to have relations with his wife for two weeks, he must divorce her.
Beis Hillel: Even if the vow is for only one week, he must divorce her.
A Torah student may leave the home for thirty days for the purpose of learning Torah even without permission from his wife.
Rav: If the husband vows not to have relations with his wife without giving any time frame, he must divorce her immediately.
Shmuel: If the husband does not specify a time frame, we give him a week, according to Beis Hillel, before he must divorce his wife.
If a husband vows that his wife may not benefit from him for up to thirty days, he must provide for her through a third party.
If his vow is for more than thirty days, he must divorce her.
Rav: If the husband vows not to have relations with his wife without giving a time frame, he must divorce her immediately.
Rav: If the husband vows that his wife may not benefit from him without giving a time frame, he must divorce her.
Shmuel: Even if no time frame is given, we give the husband thirty days before we force him to divorce her.


1. This is because the milk buildup is painful for her.
2. If there are a lot of members in the household, there is a greater likelihood that there will be a lot of guests.
3. If her husband is not present, she may do those Melachos for him as well.
4. Rav Chisda says that it applies only to fat meat and old wine. Rava says that it applies to fat meat the entire year, but it applies to old wine only in the summer.
5. We give him a week with the hope that he will find grounds to annul his vow.


If a woman wants to nurse she may do so, even if the husband objects. Rashi explains that her reason for wanting to nurse is that the milk buildup is painful for her. However, the Rambam says that the reason is that it is difficult for her to be separated from her child. The Hafla'ah says that if the child dies and she wants to nurse a different woman's child in order to alleviate the painful milk buildup, according to Rashi she has the right to do so, according to the Rambam she may not do so.
Rav Ashi took some food with his finger from the food that was to be served for the king in order to feed Mar Zutra who had paled at the sight of the food. The Rabanan asked Rav Ashi why he relied on a miracle, and Rav Ashi responded that he saw that Mar Zutra had become afflicted with Tzara'as. The Maharsha explains that the Rabanan felt that Rav Ashi placed himself in greater danger by taking from the king's food than the danger Mar Zutra faced from his illness. Rav Ashi responded that Mar Zutra was afflicted with Tzara'as, and thus the danger he faced posed a greater risk. The Chasam Sofer learns from this story that a person must be ready to put himself in danger for the purpose of saving his friend from a greater danger. However, he concludes that Rav Ashi was at risk only to have the king cut off his finger with a salve, which is not a danger to his life. However, to have a finger cut off without a salve is a danger to life, and in such a case Rav Ashi would not have been permitted to subject himself to such a risk in order to save Mar Zutra.


Any food brought in front of a person that has a smell and is desirable must be given immediately to the waiter. It is a Midas Chasidus to give him immediately from all types of food. (Shulchan Aruch OC 169:1)
Anything that has a nice smell is potentially damaging to a person's health when other people are eating it in front of him and he is giving none to taste. (Mishnah Berurah)
