SUMMARY

The Talmidei Chacham who deprive themselves in this world will be privy to Hashem's secrets in the next world.

Yeshayah cursed Klal Yisrael with 18 curses and did not calm down until he said, "A youngster will be condescending to an elder and the ignoble toward the honorable."

Even at the time of the fall of Yerushalayim, there never ceased to be people of trustworthiness in the city. However, a verse also says that Yerushalayim was destroyed only when there ceased to be any people of trustworthiness in the city. (2)

When Rebbi Yehoshua expounded on the Ma'aseh ha'Merkavah, the clouds filled the sky even though it was summertime, and a rainbow appeared and the angels gathered around to listen.

It is forbidden to castrate a dog (or any other animal).

A BIT MORE

1. Rebbi Akiva (in his initial explanation): One is for Him and one is for David. Rebbi Yosi ha'Glili and Rebbi Akiva (in his subsequent explanation): One is for Din and one is for Tzedakah. Rebbi Elazar ben Azaryah: One is for a throne and one is for a footstool.

2. The people were faithful regarding their knowledge in Torah, but they were not faithful in business matters.

3. A fire came down from heaven and scorched the trees and they all said Shirah. An angel inside the fire said that these [words] were the Ma'aseh ha'Merkavah.

4. Ben Azai glimpsed and died, Ben Zoma glimpsed and was harmed, Acher became a heretic, and Rebbi Akiva departed peacefully.

BRIEF INSIGHT

The Gemara says that we do not appoint a Meturgeman for the public who is less than 50 years old. The reason for the age of 50 is that the Mishnah says that we start teaching a child Mishnah at the age of ten. Our Sages teach that a person does not fully understand his Rebbi until after 40 years. Therefore, we must count 40 years from the age of ten, and thus only at the age of 50 is a person fit to be a Meturgeman for the public. (Chasam Sofer)

QUICK HALACHAH

It is forbidden to damage the reproductive limbs of a person or of any type of animal, both Kosher and non-Kosher animals. The prohibition applies both in Eretz Yisrael and outside of Eretz Yisrael. Anyone who transgresses this prohibition is punished with Kares. One who renders a female infertile, whether the female is a person or an animal, is exempt, but it is forbidden to do so. (Shulchan Aruch EH 5:11)
