BERACHOS 60 (20 Nisan) - Today's Daf has been sponsored by Martin Fogel of Carlsbad, California, in memory of his father, Yaakov ben Shlomo Fogel, on the day of his Yahrzeit.


1. Sometimes a person recites a blessing on a good tiding even though something bad may come of it.
2. Leah Imeinu was originally pregnant with a boy, but prayed that it should be a girl.
3. One who constantly moans and is in a constant state of worry is a sinner and causes affliction to come upon him.
4. In the times of the Gemara, a prayer was said before entering and upon leaving the bathhouse.

1. The Gemara states that whether one should make a blessing on a good tiding ("ha'Tov veha'Meitiv") or a bad tiding ("Dayan ha'Emes") is determined by the current implications of the tiding, even if the action will later have the opposite effect. The Gemara cites as an example of a situation in which one makes a blessing of "ha'Tov veha'Meitiv" a case in which one finds a valuable, lost object which he is allowed to keep, even though technically he could be reported to the government who will take it away from him.
2. Leah pitied her sister Rachel Imeinu, who would not even have as many boys as the maidservants if Leah's baby was a boy. This miraculously caused the baby boy to turn into a girl (or to be placed in Rachel's womb, according to the Maharsha in Nidah).
3. When asked for the meaning of the verse, "Praised is a person who is always frightened," Rebbi Yishmael explained that this does not refer to being in a constant state of fear, but rather to always review one's Torah learning in order not to forget it.
4. Abaye stated that, when entering the bathhouse, one should not include in his prayer the words, "And if a mishap occurs, my death should be an atonement for all of my sins," as this constitutes "opening one's mouth to the Satan" by alluding that one has sins for which he needs to be punished. (These prayers are no longer said today.)
5. We still recite the blessing of "Asher Yatzar" after using the bathroom, but we no longer say the prayer upon entering the bathroom.
