BERACHOS 29 - Two weeks of study material have been dedicated by Mrs. Estanne Abraham Fawer to honor the Yahrzeit of her father, Rav Mordechai ben Eliezer Zvi (Rabbi Morton Weiner) Z'L, who passed away on 18 Teves 5760. May the merit of supporting and advancing Dafyomi study -- which was so important to him -- during the weeks of his Yahrzeit serve as an Iluy for his Neshamah.

SUMMARY

1. Yochanan served as Kohen Gadol for 80 years, but ended up becoming a Tzeduki.

2. There is a dispute about what comprises the short version of Shemoneh Esreh.

3. The Gemara discusses what one should do when he makes a mistake while saying Shemoneh Esreh.

4. The Gemara explains what Rebbi Eliezer in the Mishnah means when he says that one should not make his prayer "Keva" (lit. "permanent").

5. One who embarks on a journey must recite Tefilas ha'Derech (the wayfarer's prayer).

A BIT MORE

1. This is the strongest proof that one should not rely on his righteousness until the day he dies.

2. Rav: it is merely a shortened version of each blessing. Shmuel: it is a short prayer called "Havinenu" which encapsulates all of the middle blessings of Shemoneh Esreh into one blessing.

3. For example, if he forgot to say "Ya'aleh v'Yavo" on Rosh Chodesh, he must repeat Shemoneh Esreh if he has already taken his steps back.

4. Some say this means that one should not pray in a way that gives the appearance that praying is a burden to him.

5. The Gemara describes this prayer as a way of "asking permission" to travel and beseeching Hashem to provide the traveler with protection from the dangers of the journey.
