MENACHOS 84 (24 Cheshvan) - dedicated by Dr. Moshe and Rivkie Snow in memory of Rivkie's father, the Manostrishtcher Rebbe, Hagaon Rav Yitzchak Yoel ben Harav Gedaliah Aharon Rabinowitz Ztz"l, Rav of Kehilas Nachalas Yehoshua in Canarsie, NY. A personification of the Torah scholar of old, the Ukranian-born Rebbe lived most of his life in the United States where his warm ways changed many lives.

SUMMARY

1. The Tana of the Mishnah maintains that the Minchas ha'Omer must be brought from grain of Eretz Yisrael. Rebbi Yosi b'Rebbi Yehudah disagrees.

2. According to Rebbi Yosi b'Rebbi Yehudah, the prohibition of Chadash took effect only when Klal Yisrael entered Eretz Yisrael.

3. The people who guard the barley that is to be used for the Minchas ha'Omer during the Shevi'is year are paid from the Terumas ha'Lishkah.

4. Although it is prohibited to burn the produce of Shevi'is, the Minchas ha'Omer is offered during the Shevi'is year even though the Kometz is burned on the Mizbe'ach.

5. Bikurim may be brought only from the seven species of Eretz Yisrael, but dates from the mountains and grain from the valley may not be brought as Bikurim.

6. If Bikurim are brought from dates from the mountains and grain from the valley, according to Rebbi Yochanan they have no sanctity. Reish Lakish disagrees.

7. A Minchah may not be brought from the new crop of grain until the Shtei ha'Lechem of Shavuos has been brought.

8. Bikurim and Nesachim may not be brought from the new crop before Shavuos.

9. One Tana states that the Parshah of Bikurim may be recited for Bikurim brought from produce which grew on a roof, in a desolate field, in a pot, or on a boat, while another Tana says that the Parshah of Bikurim may not be recited for such fruit.

A BIT MORE

1. According to Rebbi Yosi b'Rebbi Yehudah, the prohibition of Chadash applies even in Chutz la'Aretz. Since it applies in Chutz la'Aretz, grain of Chutz la'Aretz may be used for the Minchah.

2. However, once Klal Yisrael entered Eretz Yisrael, the prohibition of Chadash applies even in Chutz la'Aretz.

3. The grain of Shevi'is is Hefker, and therefore it must be guarded so that the poor do not take it.

4. The Minchas ha'Omer is offered during the Shevi'is year from the produce of Shevi'is, because the option of bringing it from the produce of the previous year does not exist. The Minchah must be brought from the first of the harvest.

5. Since those types of produce are inferior, Bikurim may not be brought from them.

6. According to Reish Lakish, just as an inferior animal may be designated and offered as a Korban, inferior produce brought as Bikurim has sanctity.

7. Even a Minchah of barley, such as a Minchas Kena'os, may not be brought from the new crop of grain before Shavuos. Even grain that grew spontaneously, or that grew on a roof, on a boat, or in a pot may not be brought.

8. Even Bikurim of fruit, such as dates or olives, may not be brought before Shavuos.

9. Reish Lakish explains that the Tana'im do not disagree. The Tana who states that the Parshah of Bikurim may be recited refers to produce which grew on the roof of a cave, in a cultivated desolate field, or in a perforated pot, or on an earthenware boat. The Tana who states that the Parshah of Bikurim may not be recited refers to produce which grew on the roof of a house, in an uncultivated desolate field, in a non-perforated pot, or on a wooden boat.
