SUMMARY
1. Rava explains that since the Kohanim and Leviyim are exempt from Pidyon ha'Ben, they are also exempt from redeeming the firstborn donkey. 2. Rava says that even if the mother of a firstborn is a Levi, the firstborn does not need to be redeemed. 3. Rebbi Yehoshua ben Levi says that Kohanim are called Leviyim in 24 places throughout Tanach. 4. When Bnei Yisrael were in the Midbar, their sheep caused the Bnei Yisrael to be exempt from redeeming the firstborn donkeys. 5. Rebbi Yochanan says that the Bechoros (both human and animal) born in the Midbar were holy. 6. Reish Lakish says that the Bechoros (both human and animal) born in the Midbar were not holy. 7. The Beraisa states that before the Mishkan was established, firstborn Jews offered Korbanos on Bamos. 8. The Beraisa states that on the day that the Mishkan was established, Korbenos Bechor were brought.

A BIT MORE
1. The verse commands to redeem "the firstborn of man and the firstborn of the non-Kosher animal (Chamor)." This teaches that only those obligated in Pidyon ha'Ben are obligated to redeem a firstborn donkey. 2. This is because the Torah says that Pidyon ha'Ben depends on "Peter Rechem," and the mother is a Leviyah (and Leviyim are exempt). 3. This teaching often shows that Kohanim share some laws with Leviyim. Here, it is used to teach that Kohanim are also exempt from Pidyon ha'Ben (even though the main reason they are exempt is due to logic that primarily applies to Leviyim). 4. The verse commands to redeem "the firstborn of man and the firstborn of the non-Kosher animal (Chamor)." This teaches that just as money was used in the Midbar and forever thereafter to exempt a firstborn son, sheep were used in the Midbar and forever thereafter to exempt firstborn donkeys. 5. This is evident from the verse, "Make holy for me all firstborn.," stated when Bnei Yisrael were still in Egypt. 6. Since the verse later states, "And when He will bring you [to the land]. and you will give over all Peter Rechem," this indicates that after it was commanded in Egypt, it no longer applied until Bnei Yisrael entered Eretz Yisrael. 7. Everyone agrees that these firstborn Jews were born in Egypt and therefore were holy. 8. Reish Lakish understands that this means that all of the firstborn animals born in Egypt were brought on that day. Rebbi Yochanan understands that the Beraisa is teaching that they started to be brought on that day, since one is not allowed to bring obligatory Korbanos on a Bamah.
