TEMURAH 21 (8 Av) - (8 Av) - Dedicated l'Iluy Nishmas Mrs. Lily (Leah bas Pinchas) Kornfeld, who passed away on 8 Av 5765, by her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Andy Koenigsberg and family. May Lily and her husband's love for Torah and for Eretz Yisrael continue in all of their descendants.

SUMMARY

1. The Mishnah lists many unique laws that apply only to Bechor and Ma'aser Behemah, and not to any other Kodshim.

2. One does not receive lashes if he intentionally blemishes a Temuras Bechor or Temuras Ma'aser.

3. There is a dispute about whether Bechoros brought from outside Eretz Yisrael may be offered as sacrifices.

4. Rebbi Yosi said three things in the name of three elders.

5. There are three Chata'os that are always put to death, and two that are sometimes put to death.

A BIT MORE

1. One difference is that Bechor and Ma'aser Behemah are not redeemed if they receive a blemish, while blemished animals of other types of Kodshim are redeemed. Another difference is that a blemished Bechor or Ma'aser Behemah may not be slaughtered and sold in the meat market or sold by weight, while blemished animals of other types of Kodshim may be slaughtered and sold in the meat market and sold by weight. (This is because the money received for other Kodshim is used to buy a similar Korban, and thus the blemished animal may be treated like an ordinary animal. In contrast, the money received for Bechor and Ma'aser Behemah belongs to the owner, and therefore the animal must still be treated with some sanctity.)

2. Similarly, one does not receive lashes if he blemishes an animal that emerged ninth in the count of Ma'aser Behemah but was proclaimed to be the tenth. These exemptions are based on derivations from various verses.

3. The Mishnah and Rebbi Yishmael: They may be offered. Rebbi Akiva: They may not be offered.

4. Rebbi Yishmael: One should not bring Ma'aser Sheni to Yerushalayim when there is no Beis ha'Mikdash. Rebbi Akiva: One should not bring Bechoros from Chutz la'Aretz to the Beis ha'Mikdash. Ben Azai: During the time of the Beis ha'Mikdash, people may not eat Ma'aser Sheni outside of the walls of Yerushalayim, even though they can see Yerushalayim.

5. The three that are always put to death are: the offspring of a Chatas, the Temurah of a Chatas, and a Chatas whose owner died.
