PAST DEDICATIONS

YOMA 74 - Dedicated by Dr. Eli Turkel l'Iluy Nishmas his mother, Golda bas Chaim Yitzchak Ozer (Mrs. Gisela Turkel), whose Yahrzeit is 25 Av. Mrs. Turkel accepted Hashem's Gezeiros with love; may she be a Melitzas Yosher for her offspring and for all of Klal Yisrael.

SUMMARY

1. While there are five forms of affliction that one must observe on Yom Kippur, one is liable for Kares only for one of them (eating and drinking). One is also liable for Kares for performing labor.

2. There is a dispute about whether eating a partial amount of a forbidden object is prohibited by the Torah.

3. The Gemara discusses how we learn that "affliction" on Yom Kippur means abstention from eating and drinking.

4. Bnei Yisrael found it difficult to have to rely upon the Man as their sole source of sustenance.

5. When a person cannot see the food that he eats, he does not feel full.

A BIT MORE

1. The other forms of affliction (washing, anointing one's body with oil, marital relations, wearing shoes) are forbidden but are not punishable with Kares. (According to some, they are forbidden only mid'Rabanan.)

2. Rebbi Yochanan: A partial amount of a forbidden item is also forbidden mid'Oraisa (although one is not punished for eating it until he eats the minimum amount). Reish Lakish: It is permitted mid'Oraisa, but the Rabanan prohibited it.

3. After stating that one must "afflict" himself on Yom Kippur, the Torah states that one may not perform labor on Yom Kippur. Just as not performing labor is a form of abstention, the "affliction" which the Torah mentions must also be a form of abstention. From this we learn that the way one must afflict himself on Yom Kippur is by abstaining from eating and drinking (as opposed to simply making oneself uncomfortable by sitting in the heat or in the cold).

4. They were not able to store the Man, and thus they were unsure whether they would have food the next day. Moreover, while the Man had the property of tasting like anything they wanted, they were not able to see that thing, leaving them less satiated.

5. Abaye says that if a person has only one meal to eat and he has a choice when to eat it, he should eat it when there is light so that he will feel more satisfied from it.
