12th Cycle dedication
CHULIN 60 (25 Av) - Dedicated by Mrs. G. Kornfeld for the eleventh Yahrzeit of her mother, Mrs. Gisela Turkel (Golda bas Chaim Yitzchak Ozer), an exceptional woman with an iron will who loved and respected the study of Torah. |

SUMMARY
1. Adam ha'Rishon offered as a Korban an ox with one horn; the horn "preceded" the hooves. 2. Rebbi Chanina bar Papa maintains that Hashem commanded each species of trees to sprout by itself and remain separate, but He did not command so to the herbage. Nevertheless, each species of herbage sprouted separately. 3. There is a doubt about whether the prohibition against grafting applies to herbage, according to Rebbi Chanina bar Papa. 4. The sun and the moon were originally created as equal luminaries. When the moon complained that it is impossible for two kings to rule at the same time, it was relegated to an inferior status. 5. Although the herbage was created on the third day of Creation, it did not actually emerge from the ground until Adam ha'Rishon prayed for rain on the sixth day of Creation. 6. The "Shesu'ah" mentioned in the Torah is a distinct species with two backs and two spinal columns. 7. There is a disagreement about whether the people called "Avim" in Sefer Yehoshua were Plishtim, or from Teiman. 8. A portion of the lands of Amon and Moav were captured by Sichon, and thus Bnei Yisrael were allowed to capture them.

A BIT MORE
1. All of Hashem's creations were created during the six days of Creation with their full stature, with their consent, and fully developed. The animals were created from the ground with fully-developed horns when they emerged head first. Thus, their horns came into existence prior to their hooves. 2. The herbage rationalized that if Hashem wanted all of the various species to emerge from the ground mixed together, then He would not have commanded the trees to sprout separately. It is a Kal va'Chomer: if each tree is distinctive and stands out and yet Hashem commanded them to sprout separately, then certainly the herbage --which grows mixed together -- should sprout separately. 3. Since Hashem did not command the species of herbage to sprout separately, perhaps there is no prohibition against grafting herbage. On the other hand, perhaps grafting herbage is prohibited because the different species of herbage indeed emerged separately. 4. Hashem pacified the moon by making it be seen even during the day, and by having the Jewish calendar based on the lunar year, and by calling the Tzadik "Katan" just as the moon is called the "ha'Me'or ha'Katan." Nevertheless, the moon was not appeased, and thus Hashem designated the goat-offering on Rosh Chodesh as atonement for diminishing the moon. 5. Hashem did not want the herbage to emerge from the ground until Adam ha'Rishon prayed, because Hashem desires the prayers of Tzadikim. 6. That such an uncommon species is mentioned in the Torah serves as proof that the Torah is from Heaven. Moshe was not a hunter; he could not have known of the existence of such a species had it not been mentioned in the Torah given by Hashem. 7. Rav maintains that they were from Teiman. They moved and resided among the Plishtim, and therefore they are mentioned among the people of Plishtim. 8. Bnei Yisrael were prohibited from capturing land from the nations of Amon and Moav. However, Sichon captured some of their land, and thus Bnei Yisrael were permitted to capture the land from Sichon.
