SUMMARY
1. If the leg of a bird is broken at the ankle or above the ankle and it is not a compound fracture, the bird is Kosher. 2. Rav Yehudah says in the name of Rav that a bird which has a dislocated thighbone is a Tereifah. Rav Huna in the name of Rav disagrees. 3. According to Rav, a bird with a dislocated wing is a Tereifah, because of the concern that a lung may be punctured. Shmuel and Rebbi Yochanan maintain that the lung must be inspected. 4. All of the various Tereifos which apply to animals apply to birds as well, with an additional Tereifah which applies to a water bird: a fractured skull. 5. If a bird fell from a height or fell into a fire, it is not necessary to inspect the lung. 6. If there is a hole in the trachea of an animal the size of an Italian Isar, the animal is a Tereifah. 7. According to Rebbi Yehudah, if the down of a bird is removed, the bird is a Tereifah. 8. Rav Huna maintains that if an animal is a Safek Tereifah and it survives for twelve months, we can be sure that it is not a Tereifah.

A BIT MORE
1. However, if one of the sinews is severed at the juncture of the sinews, the bird is a Tereifah. 2. However, even Rav Huna in the name of Rav -- who maintains that a dislocated thighbone is Kosher -- agrees that if one of the sinews is severed at the juncture of the sinews, it is a Tereifah. 3. According to Shmuel and Rebbi Yochanan, a tube must be inserted into the trachea in order to inflate the lung. If air escapes from the lung it is Tereifah, but otherwise it is Kosher. 4. The brain of a water bird has a very thin membrane, and if the skull is fractured, a puncture eventually will form in the membrane of the brain. 5. The lung is protected by the majority of the ribs. Therefore, there is no need to inspect the lung for injury from the fall or the fire. 6. If the hole is patched, it could heal somewhat. However, the animal will not survive more than twelve months, and therefore it is a Tereifah. 7. However, Rebbi Shimon ben Chalafta experimented with a bird that had its down removed. He placed it in a warm oven wrapped in a coppersmith mat, and it grew new down that was better than the original down. This proved that a bird can survive even though its down has been removed. 8. The Tana Kama states that if a female animal is a Safek Tereifah and it subsequently gives birth, we can be sure that it is not a Tereifah. Raban Shimon ben Gamliel maintains that if the injury steadily improves, we can be sure that it is not a Tereifah, but if it steadily deteriorates, we can be sure that it is a Tereifah. Rebbi maintains that if the animal survives for thirty days, we can be sure that it is not a Tereifah.
