SUMMARY

1. There is a dispute about the status of a firstborn animal that fell into a pit on Yom Tov.

2. The Gemara explains that the reasoning behind the dispute (#1) does not involve whether the animal is Muktzah.

3. Even Rebbi Shimon maintains that it is possible to realize that a firstborn has a blemish and to slaughter it on Yom Tov.

4. The Gemara discusses whether an item may be Muktzah for "half" of Shabbos.

5. The typical case of Muktzah involves putting grapes or figs out in the sun to become raisins or dried figs.

A BIT MORE

1. Rebbi Yehudah: An expert may check to see if the animal has a blemish that permits it to be slaughtered (as a firstborn animal otherwise is considered Kodshim). If it is permitted, the animal may be raised out of the pit and slaughtered. Rebbi Shimon: Any firstborn that did not have a blemish before Yom Tov may not be slaughtered on Yom Tov.

2. This would be counterintuitive, as Rebbi Yehudah is stringent and Rebbi Shimon is lenient regarding Muktzah! Rather, Rebbi Shimon is stringent because he says that judging whether a firstborn animal has a blemish is akin to passing judgment on Yom Tov, which is forbidden.

3. If a firstborn animal is born on Yom Tov with an obvious, permanent blemish, it never was considered forbidden and it is not considered "passing judgment" to say that it is permitted to be slaughtered.

4. The case is when the item was fit to be used at twilight, and during Shabbos it was temporarily ruined and unfit to be used. Then, during Shabbos, it became fit again (for example, water soaked it, causing it to become unfit, and it dried out and became fit again). The question is whether becoming unfit during Shabbos renders it Muktzah for the rest of Shabbos, even though it becomes fit again.

5. Since they seem to become inedible while drying, the owner is not interested in them until they are finished. If they are drying at twilight when Shabbos enters, they are Muktzah on Shabbos.
