Question

SUMMARY

Mid'Oraisa, a vessel of Kodesh that has a receptacle combines the contents of the vessel, such that if one item becomes Tamei, all of the items become Tamei. This applies only when the Kodesh items in the vessel are those that need to be in a utensil. (1)

Rebbi Chiya bar Aba maintains that the concept of a utensil combining its contents for Tum'ah is not of Torah origin. It is entirely mid'Rabanan. (2)

The Chachamim derive from a Kal va'Chomer that Tum'ah of Kodesh reaches until Revi'i. (3)

The Chachamim derive from a verse that Kodesh which becomes a Shelishi is Tamei.

If one hand becomes Tamei and touches the other hand, both hands are considered Tamei regarding Kodesh but not regarding Terumah. (4)

Rebbi: If the non-Tamei hand touches the Tamei hand, it is Metamei Kodesh and makes it into a Shelishi. Rebbi Yosi bar Yehudah: It makes the Kodesh only Pasul, and thus it would be a Revi'i.

Reish Lakish: The stringency that one hand is Metamei the other hand for Kodesh applies only to the same person, and not to the hand of somebody else. Rebbi Yochanan: It applies even to the hand of somebody else. (5)

Kodesh does not need Hechsher (contact with water) in order to be susceptible to Tum'ah.

When Terumah is inserted into the mouth of a person whose hands are Tamei, he may eat Chulin at the same time but not Kodesh.

The Rabanan require an Onen and a Mechusar Kipurim to immerse before eating Kodesh, since, until now, they were forbidden to eat Kodesh. They do not require immersion before eating Terumah.

A BIT MORE

1. Kodesh items that do not need a vessel, such as the remainder of the Minchah that is eaten by the Kohen, or items that are in a flat vessel that does not have a receptacle, are combined by the vessel only mid'Rabanan but not mid'Oraisa.

2. Rebbi Chiya bar Aba disagrees with Rebbi Chanin who derives from a verse the concept that a utensil combines its contents for Tum'ah.

3. The Kal va'Chomer is as follows: If a Mechusar Kipurim (a person who was Tamei, such as a Zav or a Zavah, who immersed in a Mikvah but has not yet brought the requisite Korban) -- who is permitted to eat Terumah -- renders Kodesh as Pasul upon contact, then certainly a Shelishi b'Tum'ah that is Pasul for Terumah will render Kodesh as Pasul upon contact and make it into a Revi'i.

4. Rav Shizbi says that while only one hand is touching another is the non-Tamei hand also considered Tamei.

5. Reish Lakish eventually retracted his position and agreed with Rebbi Yochanan that one person's hand could be Metamei the hands of another person as well.

BRIEF INSIGHT

The Beraisa states that one hand, which is Tamei and dry, which comes into contact with the other hand will render the second hand Tamei for Kodesh. The Rambam says that if the hand that became Tamei was wet -- even if it had no contact with the other hand -- both hands would be Tamei for Kodesh. The Ra'avad disagrees with the Rambam and says that the distinction that the Rambam makes between whether the hand is wet or dry has no source. The Kesef Mishneh explains the Rambam and says that since all of the stringencies regarding Kodesh are mid'Rabanan, it is sensible to say that since, if one hand was Tamei mid'Oraisa, it would cause the other hand to be Tamei if it was wet, regarding a Tum'ah d'Rabanan the same would apply: the hand that is Tamei would cause the other hand to become Tamei for Kodesh if it is wet.

QUICK HALACHAH

After an Onen has completed his Aninus, and after a Mechusar Kipurim has brought his Korban, they require immersion before eating Kodesh but not before eating Terumah, because an Onen and a Mechusar Kipurim are permitted to eat Terumah (even before the Aninus is completed, and even before the Mechusar Kipurim brings his Korban.) Why do the Rabanan require them to immerse before eating Kodesh? Until now they were prohibited from eating Kodesh and they have taken their minds off of it, and perhaps they became Tamei without realizing it. This stringency applies only with regard to eating Kodesh, but not with regard to touching it. (Rambam, Hilchos Avos ha'Tum'ah 12:15)
