A BIT MORE
1. Not only did they argue about this case in theory, but Rebbi Akiva actually made a Sukah on a boat when he was at sea together with Raban Gamliel. When the Sukah blew over, Raban Gamliel asked, "Akiva, where is your Sukah?"
2. Everyone agrees that if a Sukah cannot withstand a normal wind on land, then it is invalid, and if it cannot withstand an irregular wind on land, then it is valid. Rebbi Akiva: A Sukah on a boat that can withstand normal winds on land is valid even if it cannot withstand normal winds at sea. Raban Gamliel: It must withstand normal winds at sea as well in order to be valid.
3. Rebbi Yehudah: Such a Sukah is invalid, because one must be able to live in a Sukah for seven days, and one may not use an animal on Shabbos. Rebbi Meir: Technically one may live in this Sukah for seven days, because the prohibition of using it on Shabbos is mid'Rabanan and not a Torah law, and therefore it does not invalidate the Sukah.
4. Rebbi Meir says that, in general, one may not use an animal in place of an object needed for a Halachic purpose (such as a pole for permitting carrying in an alleyway, the boards of Pasei Bira'os, etc.).
5. The Gemara points out that the difference between these two opinions seems to be an animal that is sufficiently tied up. There is no concern that it will run away, but there is concern that it will die. (Its death would only invalidate the Sukah if, as a result of death, it is no longer standing and its height decreases to less than ten Tefachim. If it is a large animal, such as an elephant, which is ten Tefachim high even when it dies and is no longer standing, then the Sukah would be valid.)
