SUMMARY

A BIT MORE
1. However, Beis Shamai says that the spice grinder must be wooden, and not a stone grinder as is normally used. Beis Hillel permits the use of a stone grinder.
2. Beis Shamai: A grinder may not be used at all. Beis Hillel: A wooden grinder may be used.
3. One opinion is that since salt is used regularly, it should have been prepared and ground before Yom Tov, whereas other spices -- for which a person does not anticipate the need -- may be prepared on Yom Tov when the need arises. Another opinion is that salt does not lose flavor when it is ground before Yom Tov, as opposed to other spices that do lose flavor.
4. Beis Shamai: He may send only cooked food that the recipient will probably enjoy on Yom Tov. Beis Hillel: He may send even live animals that he may slaughter on Yom Tov, and even raw legumes that will probably be cooked on Yom Tov.
5. Beis Hillel (and certainly Beis Shamai): One may not send a gift of raw grains, as they usually are ground and one may not grind grains into flour on Yom Tov. Rebbi Shimon: One may send these grains, as it is possible to cook them and eat them without grinding.
