A BIT MORE
1. If he fails to overcome his evil inclination, he should learn Torah. If this does not help, he should recite Shema. If this does not help, he should think of his eventual day of death. 2. The Gemara says that one who says Shema at bedtime is considered as though he is holding a double-edged sword to kill the harmful agents, and thus they stay away. 3. First, he should think about his actions and see if he sinned in a manner that made him deserving of being afflicted. If he finds no sin, he should attribute the afflictions to not studying Torah or praying enough. 4. They are: Torah learning, living in Eretz Yisrael, and a portion in the World to Come. 5. In each of the stories, after the Amora related to another Amora that he is not interested in his afflictions, the second Amora would stretch out his arm and miraculously cure the sick Amora.
